But do you think I get credit for staying awake if I'm busy doodling or writing bmeridts? Oh wdL I figure as long as I don't bring a pillow or blanket sleeping at church ls fair game Now if 1 can fust learn to snore so it sounds like "Amen!" Democrat candidate for secretary of state: Indiana ‘behind the curve’ on election security
The Democratic candidate for secretary of me says Indiana is lacking plans to secure its elections. Jim Harper; of Valparaiso, said the Indiana needs to do more to secure its elections, and has taken no action to use federal funds to protect voters' ballots in a Monday pres conference outside the Lake County Government Center in Crown Point Harper is challenging Republican Secretary of State Connie Lawson. "This is an area where Indiana is well behind the curve," Harper said. Every day, Harper said people are learning more about groups and individuals trying to interfere with U.S. elections. Harper said it is critical that the secretary of state take steps now to secure Indiana's elections. "I can't think of any issue more critical in das tun* than fhgfoto itofnrity," said Jim the Lake County Democratic Central Committee. Wieser said, "Russia attacked die
100 YEARS AGO JULY 30,1918 Thursday morning about l(h30, a fire alarm was turned in for a blaze just west of town. A big straw stack on the Dr. H.J. Defrees farm caused fire, and as it was located so near the large bam it was a question few a minutes whether or not the bam could be sayed. The local fire department made a record run and by their assistance the danger to the bam was averted. The stack was a total loss. O.E. Fisher, for several years principal of the Nappanee schools, and for the past year credit man for Coppes Bros. & Zook, has gone to Gary, where he has accepted a position in die National Bank of America. Mr. Fisher's many Nappanee friends will be pleased to know of his new position as it gives him a much merited promotion and one with good opportunities few advancement Mr. Fisher had been tendered and accepted the position of the Nappanee schools for the awning year. 75 YEARS AGO JULY 29,1943 N While as usual in a case of this kind it is die unexpected that gets publicity, the regular employees at the Vitreous Steel are the "unking" heroes of today. It was but a step, from the manufacture of table tops, refrigerator parts, etc. to the manufacture of materials for war and with practically no exceptions employees of die plant have put their best efforts into their new line of work. Working in a foundry is no child's play • is real and hot work, but these men never complain - they know the results of their handwork will shorten the period of war. In spite of threatened rain, 152 children were in attendance at die Story and Recreational periods at the Community Park Tuesday morning of this week. The young women in charge were able to hold die children's attention without any difficulty, even though their groups were large, and are deserving of much commendation for their faithful service. Both girls and boys are taking much interest in the various games and contests, some with real athletic skills.

One of the largest providers and makers of voting machines admitted that a remote access feature has been hacked, Wieser said. The U 5. House of Representatives last week voted down an additional appropriation to bolster election security across the country, according to the AP, and congressional Republicans argued the currently budget S3BO million is sufficient Indiana has more than $7 million in funds from the federal government available, Harper said, but the leadership in Indianapolis has done nothing a plan to do that" Harper said. sized, however, !• that Hamilton did this by working hard, getting an education, taking advantage of opportunities that arose and having the good fortune of hying in a new nation that awarded effort. He did this m spite of his immigrant status, unstable home life, growing up in poverty and lack of social status. This could not have happened in any other nation back then. Today, the reality 0 not much improved given the few nations with high economic freedom scores. Alexander Hamilton, more than any other of our Founding Fathers, epitomizes the concept we used to call the American Dream. He saw opportunity, and through his own indefatigable drive and God-given abilities put himself into a position to benefit from it. That gives conservatives
Lawson's office submitted a plan to a federal election commission that outlined how Indiana would use the funds to improve election security. The letter said the Secretary of State's Office has assessed its cybersecurity profile and has been implementing measures to better protect voting information. Ahead of the 2018 election, Lawson said the state has nine planned actions, including partnering with the National Guard and Incident Response Cybersecurity Committee to create response plans; starting to pilot a multi-factor authentication program; evaluate voting technology; and implement encryption and digital signatures for election data. 50 YEARS AGO AUGUST 1,1968 At their special meeting Monday, nothing was cut from their 1969 budget by the Wa-Nee School Board, although there were attempts by individuals to cut certain items. The budget was approved by a vote of three to one. If there are more students enrolled next year than Superintendent Weddle estimates, then the tax levy could be cut by the amount of extra state aid available. Mr. Weddle intentionally figured a littie low, uncertain of how many students will leave to attend the new parochial schools. Then there is a possibility that the assessed valuation for the Wa-Nee District could be a littie higher than estimated. Board members of the Civic Theatre met Monday nite at 7:30 at the Park Pavilion to discuss amending the by-laws and to have a business meeting. Ray Pippenger was elected President and Juanita Hopewell Vice-President Three new members have been elected to the board - Stan Heckaman, Elden Scrock and Dorothy Taylor. "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying" will be the next production to be given this fall, with tryouts scheduled for August 12. 25 YEARS AGO JULY 28,1993 The status of Wa-Nee's Prime Time program was a major concern at the early morning meeting on Monday. School Superintendent Jerry Lelle reported that while the program had been included in the state legislature's hasty, last-min-ute budget, tiie wording providing funds for the program was inadvertently (Knitted. The Wa-Nee School Board has been assured that the technicality will be corrected and funds will be allocated January first, one day after the present funding ends. The Nappanee Public Library has been awarded the top public library award in the nation for a year-long public relations campaign. The prestigious John Cotton Dana award, tiie second to be received by the library within the past two years, was presented by the American Library Association and tiie H.W. Wilson Company at an annual conference held in New Orleans. John Cotton Dana awards are presented annually, and according to contest officials, are seldom awarded to tiie same library twice.

something to love about this success story Perhaps tm is where serious Americans who hold dear what our nation is and whet it stands for can come together on the immigration debate. We can and must recover the bully pulpit from the extremists on both sides of the issue. It is our duty to take us back to the ideal of the American Dream that Alexander Hamilton and millions of others made real in their fives, such as my ancestors who settled as German immigrant farmers in Allen County in the 1830 s and 18405.1 we all, owe this to our children and grandchildren. Mark Franke. an adjunct scholar of the Indiana Policy Review Foundation, it formerly an associate vice chancellor at Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne.
