Assistance available for single parent families
VVA-NEE - Family Christian Development Center in Nappanee is pleased to announce the launch of a new program designed to help single working parents with the burden of child care costs. The Child Care Assistance Program began on July 9 and is available to any single parent living in or working in the Wa-Nee Community Schools district. This program has been made possible thanks to an Innovation Grant from United Way of Elkhart County. The Center will partner with single working parents and their employers
Master Gardener classes starting soon
ELKHART COUNTY - Applications for the 2018 Master Gardener program are now available. Since 1996, over 650 have participated in the Master Gardener program in Elkhart County. This will be the 24th year of the program in Elkhart County, with 25 programs being offered over that time frame. The Purdue University Extension Service of Elkhart County sponsors the program. Master Gardeners is a volunteer training program. Those accepted into the program receive training on various gardening and horticulture subjects, and use that training for various community service projects. Master Gardeners participate in numerous

Honoring that contract, Common Council members voted to approve a resolution outlining the transferring of $4,800 from the mayor's budget line of human resources to a budget area entitled other services and charges. The technicality was needed for accurate records because the money will be generated to an outside source rather than a city employee. Decision was also made on a second transfer of money to correct bookkeeping errors. Originally reported in the wrong account, an estimated $9,344 was transferred from the Emergency Medical Services Local Option Income Tax funds, personal services, to the EMS LOIT, and other services and charges, account. We hope to share that burden with the parent and their employer and help them free up cash for food, rent, and medical expenses," said Mark Mikel, Executive Director at The Center. James Howard Thomas NAPPANEE James "Jim" Howard Thomas passed away on July 1, after a sudden and courageous battle with cancer. Jim was 51. Police Reports DAILY ACTIVITY REPORTS - On July 1, at approximately 12:55 a m., Timothy Walker, 46, was arrested in the area of County Road 46 and County Road 29 after being stopped by police for a traffic violation. Timothy Walker was found to be in possession of .5 grams of methamphetamine and paraphernalia. Timothy Walker was incarcerated at the Elkhart County Jail for possession of methamphetamine - felony and possession of paraphernalia - misdemeanor. - On July 1, at approximately 3:35 a.m., Justin Hill, 40, was stopped for traffic violations in the area of State Road 15 and County Road 146, and was found to be in possession of methamphetamine, marijuana, and drug paraphernalia. Justin Hill was incarcerated at the Elkhart County Jail. - On July 1, at around 2 p.m., Sheila Hooley, 47, was reported as a reckless driver on County Road 30, near County Road 15, and was located and stopped for traffic violations. Sheila Hooley was found to have operated a vehicle while intoxicated with a prior conviction of five years as well as having a license status of suspended - misdemeanor and was incarcerated at the Elkhart County Jail. - On July 2, at 3:48 p.m., Ronald Heyse, 59, reported a known suspect(s) stole items from Eugene Heyse Sr., 85, from the 25000 block of County Road 52, Nappanee, on July 1 at 12 p.m.
