■y Amy Lant-Wenger Editor NAPPANEE - The city of Nappanee hosted a true Americana themed Independence Day celebration on Wednesday, July 4 at the newly reopened Stauffer Park, beneath a canopy of warm sunshine filtered through towering shade trees. The day featured everything that families could want for a day outdoors, from food to contests, free swimming, an adorable pageant, the annual parade, and of course, fireworks to conclude the festivities. The threat of rain loomed for most of the day, as the humidity levels crept upward, but the crowds appeared undeterred by the prospect of storms. Distant lightning could be seen in the sky as the fireworks colored the night air. A number of contestants came fittingly dressed and feeling patriotic during the "Miss and Mister Firecracker" pageant. Among those who received special recognition included Alyx Jessie, "Sparkler," Jarred Hamilton as the best representation of "American Spirit," and the winner of the "Super Smile" award, Alexia Eash. Jayden Waddington was crowned the new "Miss Firecracker," while Luke Jessie earned the title of "Mister Firecracker."
