Vander Yelden to host book signing at Coppes Commons By Jamie Stoner Staff Writer PLYMOUTH "Misty Creek" author John W. Vander Velden held his first book signing event at La D'Zert Case Le Garden Chalet on Saturday March 31 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Despite being insecure in his ability to write "by the rules" Vander Velden sold and signed several copies of his first published novel. Vander Velden discussed with those present that as adults, we often read more because we have to for our jobs and not because we want to. Our time is so consumed with technical reading that many adults simply don't make the time to read something they truly enjoy. Vander Velden explained the intricacies of writing. 'The words on the page - your (the reader's) mind has to create an image that the author is trying to portray. That image is also dependent on the person who is reading or listening. I like that about it." Stiles was "impressed" with Vander Velden's readings. "I could see the dust. Your words created an image I could actually see." Currently Vander Velden is promoting his book. When asked by Murray "Is a movie deal in the works?" Vander Velden laughingly answered, "If I can get the word past Marshall County." Vander Velden continues to inspire his fans to continue to dream. He completed his book after years of writing it. He overcame his insecurities about "breaking the rules" of grammar and writing. He overcame the hurdles involving finding an agent and after much research chose to self publish. Now he is ambitiously promoting his book not only locally but as far as he can share it. "Misty Creek" is not only a story about Elizabeth, but behind the written story is one of a man who wouldn't give up on his dream. Vander Velden's books sell for "sls including sales tax. $14.02 and .98 sales tax!" Vander Velden exclaimed inducing more heart felt laughter from the room. "I had been collecting five dollar bills for two months and then I left them at home!" Vander Velden is going to host another book signing event in Nappanee this weekend at Light and Grace Book Store located at 401 Market St. at the Coppes Commons Shopping Mall. That event will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. as part of a Spring Fling promotion.
