Panthers sweep four-game week - win streak at seven

By Steve Sittler Correspondent NAPPANEE/MENTONE/ ELKHART - Kaden Gongwer nailed six threes on his way to a game-high 21 points as the North Wood Panther boys' basketball team finished the Northern Lakes Conference (NLC) schedule with a 53-41 victory over Elkhart Memorial. The win kept the Panthers in second place in the NLC at 4-3, as Northridge and Warsaw finished tied at the top at 5-2. North Wood rounded out the unprecedented four-game week (caused by a weather postponement of the Memorial game and the late addition of a Saturday matinee) by defeating non-conference opponents Tippecanoe Valley, Elkhart Christian, and Oregon-Davis to extend their winning streak to seven games and improve to 15-5 overall on the season. NORTHWOOD 53, ELKHART MEMORIAL 41 Memorial came into the game with a chance to lock up a share of the NLC title but played sluggishly in the opening period. Neither team got on the board until a basket by Panther senior Caleb Lung at the 5:25 mark, and North Wood had a 7-0 lead before Charger forward Javon Forester scored with just under three minutes remaining in j the period. It could have been worse for the visitors had North Wood not gone 1 for 5 from the three-point line, allowing Memorial to stay dose at 9-5 at the first stop. In the second period, Gongwer began to rain threes on the Chargers from all angles, knocking down three in a row in the first four minutes and forcing a Memorial timeout. Gongwer nailed his fourth trey of the quarter with 5 seconds to play

Delio finished with 19 points to lead all scorers and also picked up six steals, while Lung added 15 points. Glick had a great floor game with four points, five rebounds, and five assists. Valley was paced by 17 points from sophomore Tanner Trippiedi who nailed five three-pointers. NORTHWOOD 55, ELKHART CHRISTIAN 43 Against the feisty Eagles, ranked #l2 in the state in Qass IA, Gongwer and Nick Bean came out hot combining for 15 first-period points on 6 of 6 from the field to boost North Wood to a 21-8 lead.
