Bv Amy Lant-Wenger Editor ELKHART COUNTY - There has been an uptick in criminal activity recently, and law enforcement officials across Elkhait County are asking folks to be more vigilant and to take necessary safeguards to protect their belongings and their privacy. In two separate reports, both of which were released on November 14, the Elkhart County Sheriff's Department described incidents ranging from theft of items in vehicles to telephone scams. In other matters, the board was given a peek at the 2017 Christmas card that will be sent on behalf of Wa-Nee Community Schools. As has been the case in previous years, students are invited to contribute artwork, and the winning design is selected out of those submitted. 13 meeting, Mayor Jenkins reported to the Board of Public Works and Safety, which authorizes how expenditures are paid, that he is considering taking the position from the budgeted fulltime role to a consultant contracted on an "as needed" basis. Board of Works members approved the mayor collecting quotes for this new role of consultant prior to the group meeting on Dec. 6. WATER/WASTEWATER Two financial expenditures, and filling of a vacant position, were all approved for Water and Wastewater Manager Gale Gerber. Board of Works members approved: • Paying $20,000 to commonwealth Engineering to prepare new wells and transmission lines • Declaration of Emergency regarding flooding at the museum inside the Nappanee Center. Work for repairs was authorized at a cost not-to-exceed $12,000. • Open an operator's position in the Waste Water Treatment Department. The long vacant roll of foreman was updated to fill the need of an additional operator's position. Applications for the new position need to be submitted to the City of Nappanee by 12 p.m„ Dec. 26. NEW LOGO DESIGN Stillson Studios, Nappanee, submitted a quote of $750 for work to redesign the city's "Embrace the Pace" logo. The bid was authorized by Board of Works members. MEETINGS OPEN TO THE PUBLIC Nappanee Board of Public Works and Safety meets at 3:30 p.m., on the second and third Mondays of each month, 300 W. Lincoln St. Meetings are open to the public. tion that an Elkhart County resident had answered a phone call from an individual that was "spoofing" or using the Elkhart County Sheriff's Department's phone number of 574-891-2100 to make the call. Caller ID "spoofing" is the practice of changing the caller ID to any number other than the one that is actually calling. The caller identified herself as an officer with the Elkhart County Sheriff's Department, informing the victim that they had missed jury duty, resulting in warrants for her arrest. The caller instructed the victim to purchase iTunes gift cards to pay court fees for not showing up for jury duty, totalling $2050. A report has since been filed through the Goshen City Police Department. A similar act transpired on Tuesday, Nov. 14, this time with a call from a pair of

After falsifying information leading the victim to believe mat they were law enforcement officers, they warned the individual that he/she would face contempt of court charges unless they were paid S3OOO in iTunes gift cards. The victim provided financial information to the suspects, giving them sensitive personal access to the victim's accounts. The Elkhart County Sheriff's Department would never call for payments or ask for banking information over the phone. Anyone who receives that kind of scammer call should contact the Elkhart County Sheriff's Department's non-emergency line at 574-533-4151. Also, anyone with information regarding the thefts of vehicles is asked to call the same number.
