LEAF PICKUP DATES IN WAKARUSA WAKARUSA —Leaf collection for Wakarusa residents is now underway, and will continue until Nov. 30. East-west roads will be picked up on Mondays and Wednesdays, while those residing on north-south streets will have pick-up on Tuesdays and Thursdays. There will be no service on Fridays. Leaves should be arranged in piles along the grassy parts of the yards, facing the street. Do not pile leaves in the street, and avoid placing grass in the piles, as they clog the vacuum equipment. Limbs should be placed in separate piles. Call 574-862-4314 for questions. BUILD CREATIVITY NAPPANEE - The Nappanee Public Library Lego Club will hold their next meeting on Thursday, Oct. 19 from 6:30-8 p.m. Enjoy peer-judged building challenges and win prizes! LEARN ABOUT SHIPWRECKS ELKHART COUNTY The Elkhart County Genealogical Society will hold a meeting on Thursday, Oct. 19 at 7 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, 200 E. Beardsley, Elkhart. Use the east entrance to the church. Refreshments will be served. The speaker for the evening is Dr. Kelby Rose, Deputy Director of Interpretive Services with the Elkhart County Parks Department. He will give a presentation about shipwrecks of the American Revolution and share his experiences working on underwater shipwreck evacuations and surveys in Turkey, Italy, and Sweden. A number of special events will be taking place on Tuesday, Oct. 31, with a few area businesses getting into the spirit of the holiday with harvest themed adventures. Official trick or treat hours for the City of Nappanee will be from 5-7 p.m. Residents are asked to turn on the porch light so that the children know your home is safe to receive goodies. A Harvest Party will be taking place at the Downtown Pavilion from 6:30-8 p.m. There will also

On Monday, Oct. 9, approximately 200 pumpkins were carefully placed into position to create the splendid sight of the "Pumpkin Tree.'The tree measures nearly 15 feet in height, and typically remains downtown until early November. With plans to have the town's Fall Party outdoors this year, the Pumpkin Tree will be the perfect backdrop for the festivities. This year's tree is being sponsored by the Elkhart County Community Foundation and Miller's Senior Living.
Duo headed to state finals NAPPANEE Jared Hoffman and Brant Mast have had quite the ride over the last couple of weeks. From having to brave the long extended hours of playing in the regional after the team competitions were complete, to dealing with Indiana fall weather, they have persevered. This past weekend the North Wood tennis doubles team ironically played an IHSAA tournament in Michigan (Niles) due to rain fall in LaPorte. The boys defeated Kankakee Valley and Chesterton to earn a trip to the state finals, beginning Friday, Oct. 20 at Park Tudor High School (7200 N. College Ave., Indianapolis, IN 46240). 0 Seniors Mast and Hoffman (19-2; 6-0) will take on Hamilton Southeastern seniors Mark Slaninka and Andrew Myers (119; 5-0) in the quarterfinals match, with the semifinals and championship to be played Saturday at 10 a.m and 2 p.m. Admission is $5 per person. 0 9

New twist for Wakarusa fall activities By Amy Lant-Wenger Editor WAKARUSA - The return of an established tradition, and the debut of a prospective new one, that is what awaits Wakarusa area residents as the fall season begins. This year, for the first time in its 40-plus year existence, the Wakarusa Historical Museum is presenting festivities that will be designed around the autumn theme, and in conjunction with the annual Town Party. The museum will be conducting a "Trunk or Treat" event from 6-9 p.m., which is held within the same time frame as the Town Party. At the Museum, volunteers will be dressed in costume amidst a mysterious backdrop of decorated museum facilities, with stops along the way for the youngsters to gather treats. There promises to be a few surprises in store at various places on the journey, as a setting of historical significance lends itself to a few shivers and spooks. Guests can take advantage of the hayride shuttle that will be provided to transport folks to and from the museum. Or passengers can opt for the scenic autumn hayride around downtown Wakarusa as well. At the Wakarusa Town Party, there will be a costume contest which will begin at' 6 p.m., which includes the following categories: homemade; ghosts, witches, and all things scary; TV, cartoon, and movie characters, and sports and occupations. The age brackets will be 0-4 years of age, 5-7 years old, and 8-11 years old. First place winners will receive $lO plus a goodie bag, with second place winners taking home $5 and a goodie bag. Those receiving third place honors will be given a goodie bag. Back for another year will be the popular Cake Walk, which gets underway at 7 p.m. Also beginning at 7 p.m. will be a special showing of a "Halloween Town" movie, so bring chairs and other seating options to enjoy the feature. The Wakarusa Town Party is presently being sponsored by the following local businesses, including Larimer Furniture, Ab Brown/State Farm, Schwartz Electric, Pro IT Solutions, Quality Window and Door, Cook's Pizza, Hess Realty, New to You, Wakarusa Chamber, and Wakarusa Main Street, Inc. The Wakarusa Historical Museum "Trunk or Treat" «is currently sponsored by the Wakarusa Dime Store, Wakarusa Saw Mill, Shortstop Inn, Weaver Ag and Lawn Equipment, Brubacher Lawn Care, the Advance-News, and Interra Credit Union.
