Panthers unbeaten with 61-37 win over liberty Christian
By Steve Sittler Correspondent MARION - Vinny Miranda and Luke Zurcher each scored 16 points as the Class 3A No. 1-ranked North Wood Panthers unproved to 6-0 with a 61-37 thumping of defending Class A state champion Liberty Christian in the opening game of the Marion Qassic. The Panthers claimed the No. 1 ranking in the state in Class 3A after previously top-ranked Twin Lakes, coached by Bremen native Kent Adams, fell to the Culver Academies. The Panthers came out scorching hot from the field, scoring the first eight points of the game on 3-pointers by Zurcher and Caleb Glick and a two by Zurcher, forcing a timeout by Liberty Christian, a private school located in Anderson, Indiana. The timeout did little good, however, as Zurcher and Glick each nailed another 3 in the quarter, leading the Panthers to a 20-8 advantage at the first stop. The Lions settled down slightly in the second period, playing the Panthers even at 13 all thanks to four points apiece from Isaiah Brees and leading scorer Ronny Williams, but North Wood still led comfortably 33-21

at the halftime break behind seven points from Miranda. The Panthers expanded their lead in the third quarter thanks to five more points from Miranda and continued stifling defense by Zurcher on Williams, who managed just a single basket and picked up two fouls. Caleb Lung and Trey Bilinski also added key offensive rebound baskets as North Wood took a 47-29 advantage to the final period. Despite clearing his bench midway through the fourth period, Panther head coach Aaron Wolfe's charges continued to pull away from the Lions, with Brad Delio, Luke Holland, and Jordan BeMiller all knocking down buckets. North Wood outscored Liberty 14-8 in the final quarter and cruised to the easy win. In addition to leading the Panthers in scoring with 16 points, Zurcher also pulled down a season-nigh eight rebounds while Miranda added seven rebounds and three assists to go with his 16 points. Glick contributed a season-high seven points and Lung added six points and five boards in the victory. Williams, who came into the game averaging 28 points per game, was held to just eight points on 4 of 11 shooting, while Trajan Dixon also contributed eight points for the Lions.
