North Wood shuts down Lady Pilgrims

By Whitney Worthen Sports Writer NAPPANEE What does Plymouth do when Alii Andrews can't score and Halle Reichard leaves in the first quarter? The Lady Pilgrims look for someone to step up. However, Andrews' and Reichard's shoes just seemed too big to fill against the Lady Panthers, and Plymouth fell 40-24 to North Wood on the road Saturday night. "Offensively we aren't going to win any games scoring two points in a half," said Plymouth head coach Dave Duncan. "I hand it to North Wood. They came out and pressured our guards, and we didn't handle the pressure very well. Obviously, we are not happy with the way we played tonight and just have to go bade to the gym and get better." North Wood had a great game plan, and the Panthers executed. They held Andrews to zero points, sent Reichard out with three fouls in the first period and went 12 for 18 at the line. "I thought the kids did exactly what we told them to do," said North Wood head coach Adam Yoder. "We got off to a good start on offense... We didn't get great shots - we were honest with ourselves about that but we got good shots... Game-plan wise those kids were off the charts tonight. "Nicole Flickinger and Neely Trenshaw with her were players of the game. I know our scoring was g00d... but to hold Alii Andrews to zero points - who I think is one of the best players in the game - shows a lot about those two players and their commitment to defense. That was awesome to ... ft see. After a grueling first quarter, Plymouth was down star guard Reichard and had barely breeched the paint, going 1 for 7 from the perimeter for its only points in the period. The Pilgrims trailed Northwood 12-3. The second quarter would soon decide whether Plymouth was in the game at all. The Pilgrims trudged their way back into the game, but it was all they needed. Plymouth's Kacee Peters started the climb after drawing a foul and sinking one of her two free throws and then following up by driving in a bucket off of a handoff from Andrews. The Pilgrims picked up momentum and drove their way to a 13-12 lead off a 10-0 run with 2:30 left in the half. "We just talked about in that moment to get a little more grit," said Duncan. "We changed our defense up to a 1-2-1

That led into some offense for us. We just wanted to be aggressive with the ball." The momentum swung back the other way when Andrews passed after a Cassidy Holiday cut, and Plymouth turned the ball over. The Lady Panthers quickly turned around and had Mackenzie Bergman throw in a big 3 to give the Panthers the lead again.

Plymouth responded with an under-the-basket two, but it was not enough to give the Pilgrims their momentum back and stop Northwood from finding its rhythm again. Northwood just thought it was just due for some shots to fall. "I think we were due to hit some shots," said Yoder. "We didn't take any great shots in the second quarter. We took plenty good ones, but we just could not make anything." Meanwhile, the Lady Pilgrims struggled to even put points on the board in the first quarter while Northwood pounded them for every mistake. With three minutes off the clock, the Pilgrims were already looking at 7-0 deficit. Two minutes later, Taitlyn Trenshaw stole the ball for a breakaway drive, extending the Panthers to a 9-0 lead. During the drive, Reichard fouled Trenshaw for her second foul, sending her to the line for a chance at an extra point. Trenshaw swished the and-one to give her team a doubledigit lead.. Plymouth falls to 8-5 overall and 2-5 in the NLC; Northwood improves to 10-2 overall and 3-0 in the conference. "It's just a game that when you play Plymouth, it's never easy. I don't care if it's boys, girls, fourth grade or varsity, they just have a way of making you play the way they want to play," said Yoder. "Plymouth is just such a strong program, especially when it comes to not letting you get too far away from them. They 7 ve played some teams that are really, really good teams - Warsaw and John Glenn. Those are really good teams, and they just keep hanging around them and hanging around them. They aren't getting the Ws, but that 7 s a gritty, gritty group - Robinson and all those other girls." • NORTHWOOD 40, PLYMOUTH 24 At Northwood North Wood: 12 10 10 8 —4O Plymouth: 312 72 24 Northwood (40): Taitlyn Trenshaw (13), Mackenzie Bergman (12), Riley Hershberger (8), Savannah Feenstra (5), Neely Trenshaw (2), Nicole Flickinger (0), Erin Grabcr (0), Kira Robinson (0) Plymouth (24): Jennah Nifong (8), Halle Reichard (5), Kacee Peters (4), CeCe Robinson (3).
