Panthers open season with 59-43 win over Triton
By Steve Sittler Correspondent ft' r NAPPANEE Luke Zurcher repeated his performance of by pouring in 18 points to lead four players in double figures as the Gass 3A 4th-ranked North Wood Panther boys' basketball team downed Triton 59-43 in the season-opener at The Pit in Nappanee. The start of the season was delayed 10 days by the success of the football team which reached the state championship game just a week before. With football quarterback Trey Bilinski in the starting lineup just a week after leading his team to the state finals, the Panthers looked a bit rusty in the first period but Zurcher and fellow senior Vrnny Miranda poured in nine of North Wood's 11 points in the quarter. Meanwhile Triton coach Jason Groves ran players in and out of the game like it was a Las Vegas stage show and the strategy was initially effective as the Trojans led 12-11 at the first stop.

Things began to turn around for the Panthers in the second quarter thanks to fiery sixth-man Brad Delio who sparked a rally with eight second-period points including a trey and an old-fashioned three-point play. In addition, North Wood turned up the defensive intensity, led by the interior efforts of Bilinsjd who throttled the Triton post men and made three steals, pushing the Panthers to a 28-23 halftime advantage. The third quarter turned out to be decisive, as North Wood outscored Triton 20-8, led by Zurcher who rained a pair of threes on the Trojans on his way to 12 points in the period. Miranda finished the quarter with three free throws after being foolishly fouled by a Trojan on a last-second heave from mid-court and the Panthers took a 48-31 lead to the final eight minutes. With Bilinski and junior Caleb Lung leading the way, North Wood pulled ahead by as many as 20 points in the final stanza before both coaches finally emptied their benches with nearly two minutes remaining as the Panthers cruised to a 16-point win. Zurcher led all scorers with 18 points, while Miranda, Delio, and Lung had 10 points apiece. Miranda added nine rebounds, just missing a double-double, while Lung contributed fiyc.boards and four steals. Zachary Pitney scored lO points for Tritoft, -the only man in jioubtfc'ftgures, while Nathan Flenar chipped in nine points. The Parithet-s (1-0) will Host Westview (3-0) on Dec. 8,
