Going ‘gaga’ at Wakarusa Elementary
By Amy Lant-Wengf.r Assistant Editor WAKARUSA Folks were going a little bit gaga at Wakarusa Elementary one recent weekend. No, they were not having an insanity spell, although the argument could be made that there would have to be a touch of lunacy in taking on a significant project during the coldest, snowiest day of the season thus far. But as is always the case with such generous people of the town, when the spirit of a family volunteer day beckons, they heed the call. Residents, civic leaders, students, and staff members all turned out to construct two "Gaga Ball" pits on the spacious grounds of Wakarusa Elementary on the morning of Saturday, Nov. 19. Despite the less than ideal weather conditions, the collective volunteers were able to build the two pits in a very short span of time. Gaga ball is a variation of the “traditional dodge ball games, played within the confines of a perimeter of geometric shape and more specific in rules and execution. The inspiration for a day of volunteering came about through a national initiative between the Walt Disney Company and generation On. Wakarusa Elementary fifth grade teacher, Mary Slabaugh, explains, "Family Volunteer Day is a day of service where families volunteer and work together to support their neighborhoods and communities." It was Wakarusa Elementary principal John Payne who introduced Slabaugh to the concept of what generationOn was about, and they, in turn, decided to bring that mis-

sion to a local level, involving the students as much as possible. "generationOn is a service learning organization that provides resources for educators who want to encourage students to volunteer and serve others." generationOn is the youth focused division of Points of Light, which is a worldwide organizations that work through promoting volunteerism to instill compassion in young people. Once the staff and administrators became enlightened, the next step was to bring about the energies of the students. So the Student Leadership team of Wakarusa Elementary was recruited to help out. This group, comprised of 18 fifth graders chosen by their peers, work on various projects throughout the school year that will ultimately benefit the school and the community. It didn't take long for the town to catch on to the enterprise, and before long, donations began streaming in. All of the materials for the new pits were given by Ace Builders, Popcorn's Construction, and Hoover Lumber. A donation of hardware came all the way from Ohio - a facility called Hartville Hardware. generationOn also awarded the school a service-learning grant for a beautification portion of the project. Spring flowering bulbs were planted the same day that the new pits were crafted. Many volunteers even came beforehand to handle a great deal of the preparatory work in getting the sites ready for the new pits. Slabaugh noted that Lamar Slabaugh of Popcorn's Construction, Mark Steiner, Randy Menzie, Greg Menzie, and a number of WES parents got involved with that phase of the construction to facilitate the swift completion on Saturday.
