100 YEARS AGO November 24,1916 Because it is alleged he threw a quantity of paris green on the grass along a public highway, causing two horses to become poisoned and die, Milton Miller, a prominent farmer residing near Nappanee, has been made the defendant in a S6OO damage suit filed Monday in the circuit court. The suit was filed by Vert C. Sechrist, a neighbor of Miller. In the complaint, the plaintiff charges that he had been accustomed to letting his animals graze along the public highways and that while eating they were always carefully guarded. On one morning in April 1915 while passing the Miller home Sechrist says he was called in to do Miller's chores and that he left his team standing in the road in the charge of a hired hand. While he was doing Miller's work the horses ate some grass along the highway in front of the defendant's home upon which a quantity of pans green had been poured. The animals became poisoned and died soon after. The plaintiff charges the defendant with carelessness and neglect and demands damages of S6OO. 75 YEARS AGO November 27,1941 On Friday evening, the Nappanee Bulldogs will meet the Mishawaka Maroons on the local court in a non-conference battle. The Mishawaka athletic program has just switched from the gridiron to the hardwood and the quality of their basketball

team is not known. However, Coach Struck always manages to get together a tough aggregation and takes especial delight in tripping the Bulldogs. Last year, the two teams split even each winning their home game. The Bulldogs can not be rated as favorites because they have been unable to win a contest but they should have a good opportunity to chalk up a victory against an unexperienced Mishawaka team. Doyle and Bigler have scored just about the same number of points to date getting 28 and 27 respectively. None of the other Bulldogs have given them very much help. If the scoring can become just a little more balanced with Johnson, Johnston, and Newcomer hitting a little better, they will have some chance of getting in the win column. 50 YEARS AGO November 24,1966 At the last School Board meeting, Ralph Bell asked why the Board had never considered the petition which Citizens Committee presented to the County Zoning Board, asking for two high schools in the district. Mr. Bell was told that the petition never reached the School Board, so there was no action which could be taken on it. The Advance-News has received information from several people that they signed the petition because it was presented to them under false pretenses. There has been rumor that many of the names contained on it were not voters within the Wa-Nee district. The Citizens Committee

claims that 2,465 names were on the petition. In the last School Board election, only 2,100 people voted. Apparently, no official body will accept the petition until the names on it have been verified. According to an interview at the Court House, the Advance-News learned that the Citizens Committee would have to pay a fee to have each name verified, which would be a long and arduous task. • Again, businessmen in Nappanee are receiving mail from a company calling itself Central Classified Directory. In bold red type at the top, it is labeled Classified Directory. There is a price shown of $65, and several recipients mistake this for a bill. 25 YEARS AGO November 27,1991 Recommendations on the refurbishing and/or restructuring of either South Elementary or Union Center Elementary were presented by Coal and Associates at the Monday evening meeting of the school board. Architects chose South Elementary as the most suitable site for a four section school that would better serve students in larger capacity. According to a representative of Coal and Associates, many different aspects were reviewed before coming to a decision. They began by looking at the general condition of both buildings and sizing up the mechanical and electrical systems, moving on to site evaluations and how each complied with state standards and codes, along with facilitating the handicapped.
