Panthers win regional with 52-28 win over New Haven
By Steve Sittler Correspondent NAPPANNE Junior running back Brayton Yoder rushed for a career-high (and school record) 252 yards and four touchdowns, and the Black Crunch defense throttled New Haven in the second half as the 13-0 North Wood Panthers crushed previously unbeaten New Haven 52-28 to win" the Class 4A regional championship. The title was the first for the No. 2-ranked Panthers since 2008 and boosted North Wood to the semistate where it will face Lowell for the right to represent northern Indiana in the state championship game at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. "Brayton was really our meal ticket tonight," said a happy head coach Nate Andrews, who cared not that his own single-game rushing record of 228 yards was broken by Yoder on this night. "Our offensive line was tremendous and opened a lot of holes for him." Despite winning the coin toss, New Haven deferred their choice to the second half, allowing the powerful North Wood offense to get the ball first, and the Panthers responded as they have almost every game this season with an opening touchdown drive. A critical fourth-down conversion on a Trey Bilinski-to-Drew Minnich pass kept the drive alive, and Brayton Yoder finished it off with a 33-yard burst around right end for his first score of the night. Bronson Yoder added the two-point PAT run out of the Wildcat formation, and the Panthers led 8-0 less than four minutes into the contest. The Bulldogs responded with a touchdown drive of their own, taking a pop-up kickoff at their own 40-yard line and driving 60 yards in 10 plays, with senior running back NiShawn Jones taking it the last 5 yards for the score. The PAT kick by Juan Bonilla cut the North Wood lead to one point at 8-7. The Panthers answered with another scoring drive, needing just nine plays to drive 80 yards with Minnich making a spectacular one-handed catch at the New Haven 8-yard line to set up the score. Bronson Yoder punched it in from there and added another PAT run to put North Wood up 16-7 on the last play of the first period. After New Haven's next drive died at the Panther 26-yard line on downs, and North Wood went three-and-out thanks to a penalty and a high snap, the Bulldogs mounted another scoring drive that ended on a 39-yard touchdown pass from Keshawn Moore to 6'5" wide receiver Whitney Harris. The PAT kick was no good, and North Wood clung to a 16-13 advantage. On the Panthers' next series, the penalty bug bit again, and, facing fourth and 11 at midfield, Andrews elected to go for it but Bilinski was sacked, giving the ball to New Haven. The Bulldogs took advantage, quickly going the distance in just four plays with the Moore-to-Harris connection clicking again for a 26-yard TD. The PAT kick made it 20-16 New Haven with 2:40 to play in the half, the latest North Wood has trailed in a game since the opening contest of the season. It mattered not to the Panther offense, however, as they ground out an impressive 12-play, 80-yard scoring drive featuring a mix of runs and passes. Bilinski finished off the drive with a 5-yard TD strike to a leaping DeAndre Smart, and, although the PAT run failed, North Wood led 22-20 at ihehalf. sono | j. j New Haven got the kickoff to start the second half but, despite a 40-yard return by Jones, could do nothing and turned the ball back over to the Panthers on downs at the North Wood 40-yard line. Using the legs of Brayton Yoder behind the mighty Panther line of Caleb Newcomer, Lorenzo Rocha, Dylan Miller, Andrew Miller, and Micuh Lehman, the Panthers quickly drove down the field, and Bronson Yoder

North Wood's Brayton Yoder lunges for more yards against New Haven. Yoder rushed for a school-record 252 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Panthers to a 52-28 victory over the Bulldogs in the regional championship. ended the drive with a 1-yard TD plunge. The PAT featured a tricky play in which Payton Bear took a direct snap and ran left, then pitched the ball to Bronson Yoder going the other way, who flipped it to Bilinski in the end zone, giving North Wood at 30-20 lead. Things went from bad to worse for New Haven on the ensuing kickoff, as Kyle Luster's pop-up was fumbled, resulting in a huge dogpile near midfield that eventually spit out North Wood's Ethan Hochstetler happily clutching the pigskin. Two plays- later, Brayton Yoder went 35 yards up the middle, then toted in the PAT himself to boost the Panther lead to 38-20. The rest of the third quarter was a defensive battle, featuring two punts by New Haven and one by North Wood, as the Black Crunch defense did not allow the Bulldogs a single first down. As the fourth quarter began, the Panthers had the ball near midfield, but it didn't stay there for long as Brayton Yoder ripped off another long scoring run, again up the middle for 36 yards and a score. Adler Chamberlain's PAT kick pushed North Wood's lead to 45-20 with 10:42 to play in the game. New Haven had one last effort to make a game of it, taking the ensuing kickoff 68 yards in eight plays with Moore finding Kentrel Thomas on a 16-yard TD strike, then hitting James Gardner with the PAT pass to cut the Panther lead to 45-28 and give the Bulldog faithful a glimmer of hope. North Wood snuffed out that hope, however, by eating up almost five minutes of game clock on a drive that died an inch short of the New Haven goal line, but after a near-safety on the first play, Landen Gessinger intercepted

a Moore pass, giving the ball back to the Panthers deep in Bulldog territory. Brayton Yoder capped his record-setting night with a 4-yard TD run for the final 52-28 margin. North Wood finished with a season-high 342 yards on the ground, led by 252 yards and four scores by Brayton Yoder. Bronson Yoder added 69 yards and two TDs rushing and also ran in two PATs and threw for another. Bilinski was a quietly efficient 14 of 21 through the air for 140 yards and a score, content to let his powerful rushing attack do most of the damage. The North Wood receiving corps was paced by Smart, who hauled in five passes for 44 yards and a TD. The Black Crunch defense, who held the state-leading New Haven offense to barely half its average, was paced by Smart, who made eight tackles. Bronson Yoder added six stops, and Bear had a sack and two tackles for loss. The New Haven rushing attack was led by 109 yards and a TD from Jones, all of it in the first half. Moore was 15 of 26 for 192 yards and three touchdowns through the air and ran in the fourth Bulldog score. The stunned New Haven defense, who came into the game allowing just 11 points per contest, was led by nine tackles each from Ivan Upshaw and Jonyvan Johnson, while T.J. Whitt contributed eight stops. North Wood (13-0) will travel to Lowell (9-4) on Nov. 18 to face the Red Devils who advanced to the semistate with a 44-23 win over Hobart. The winner earns a trip to Indianapolis for the Class 4A state championship game on Thanksgiving weekend. • NORTHWOOD 52, NEW HAVEN 28 At Nappancc New Haven: 7 13, 0 8— 28 North Wood: 16 6 16 14 —52 NW - Brayton Yoder 33 run (Bronson Yoder run) NH - Keshawn Moore 5 run (Juan Bonilla kick) NW - Bronson Yoder 8 run (Bronson Yoder run) NH - Whjtney Harris 39 pass from Moo«r<kifclt failed) HlanaE NH - Harris 26 pass from Moore (Bonilla kick) NW - DeAndre Smart 5 pass from Trey Bilinski (run failed) NW - Bronson Yoder I run (Bilinski pass from Bronson Yoder) NW - Brayton Yoder 35 run (Brayton Yoder run) NW - Brayton Yoder 36 run (Adler Chamberlain kick) NH - Kentrel Thomas 15 pass from Moore (James Gardner pass from Moore) NW - Brayton Yoder 4 run (Chamberlain kick) North Wood New Haven Yards Rushing 342 121 Yards Passing 140 192 Passing (Comp/Alt/Int)l4-21-0 15-26-1 Penalties (No/Yds.) 7-55 5-35 Fumbles (No./Lost) 0-0 , 2-1 Punts (No./Avg.) 2-42 2-30 Rushing - North Wood (Brayton Yoder 26-252, 4 TD; Bronson Yoder 16-69, 2 TD; Bear 4-9; Bilinski 7-9; Gessinger 1-3); New Haven (Jones 13-109, TD; Moore 4-[-30]; Gardner 2-25; Freeman 4-17) Passing - North Wood (Bilinski 14-21-0, 140 yds., TD); NcW Haven (Moore 15-26-1,192 yds., 3 TD) Receiving - North Wood (Smart 5-44, TD; Gessinger 2-10; Bear 3-17; Bronson Yoder 2-37; Brayton Yoder 1-10; Minnich 2-27); New Haven (Harris 3-74, 2 TD; Gardner 3-36; Jones I -4; Thomas 4-51, TD; Myers 3-18; Trotter I -9)
