Panthers win NLC 7 By Steve Sittler Correspondent NAPPANEE is a common name in these parts, they surely are now and indeed, must have grown tired of hearing it on the Andrews Reid PA system on Friday night. Brayton Yoder rushed for three touchdowns and caught a pass for another, and Bronson Yoder added three rushing scores, leading the Gass 4A No. 2-ranked North Wood Panthers to a 61-24 drubbing of the Tigers. The Senior Night victory clinched the Northern Lakes Conference (NLC) title for North Wood, their first since 2004 and their first outright conference crown since 1996. As has often been the case, this fall, the Panthers opened the scoring by taking the opening kickoff and driving 80 yards in nine plays with Bronson Yoder taking the pigskin the final yard for the TD. The talented sophomore added the PAT run, and North Wood led 8-0 just three minutes into the game. After forcing a Tiger punt, senior quarterback Trey Bilinski found Bronson Yoder for 55 yards on a great catch-and-run to set up the Panthers with a first down at the Warsaw 29-yard line. Three plays later, Brayton Yoder bolted in from 14 yards out, following a great goal-line block by wide receiver DeAndre Smart, and then added the PAT run to make it 16-0 Panthers. A surprise onside kick by the Panthers was recovered by Warsaw near midfield, and the Tigers quickly capitalized on back-to-back passes from Michael Jensen to Devin Street, the second a 21-yard TD strike that drew the Tigers to within nine points at 16-7. On their next series, North Wood surprisingly went for it on fourth and 9 at their own 24-yard line but were stuffed by the Tiger defense and turned tne ball over deep in Panther territory. Warsaw running back Will McGarvey promptly picked up 17 yards on the first play, but a sack by Drew Minnich forced a field goal attempt by Andrew Mavis that was good from 43 yards out, narrowing the Panther lead to 16-10. North Wood responded with another long drive that ate nearly six minutes off the game clock, culminating with a 14-yaid TD scamper by Brayton Yoder that pushed the Panther lead back to 14 at 24-10. On the ensuing kickoff, North Wood's Spencer Brubacher drilled Tiger return man D'Andre Street, causing him to cough up the football at his own 20-yard line where it was pounced on by Nic Bontrager. Bilinski then hit Minnich, who made a great catch near the goal line and bolted in to make it 32-10 Panthers after Bronson Yoder's third successful PAT run. Still reeling from the back-to-back scores, the Tigers had to punt the ball away on their next series, and it took just six plays for North Wood to reach paydirt again, this time on a 29-yard reception by Brayton Yoder from Bilinski. Bronson Yoder's PAT run made it 40-10 Panthers With 3:51 still to play in the half. Unfortunately for the visiting Tigers, the carnage continued as Smart picked off a tipped Jensen pass on the next series, setting up the Panthers at midfield. A 44-yard pass from Bilinski to Bronson Yoder put the ball at the Tiger 11-yard line, and the speedy sophomore took it the last 11 yards on a run to push the Panther lead to 46-10. On the Tigers' next series, Jensen was intercepted again, this time by junior Landen Gessinger who returned the pick 40 yards to tne Tiger five-yard line with less than a minute to play in the half. After a pair of incomplete passes and a short run put the ball at the one-yard line, Bronson Yoder capped the scoring with a one-yard TD run and Brayton Yoder added the PAT run, leaving the stunned Tigers trailing 54-10 at the half. The Tigers took the second half kickoff and marched to the North Wood 31-yard line before turning the ball over on downs. Three plays later, Brayton Yoder bolted around

left end and outran the entire Warsaw defense for a 60-yard touchdown, putting the Panthers up 61-10 after Adler Chamberlain's PAT kick.

Panther special teams ace Spencer Brubacher forces a fumble from Warsaw returner D'Andre Street on a first-half kickoff. North Wood recovered and punched in a score in its 61 -24 rout of the Tigers. North Wood then began substituting freely and the reserves kept the Tigers out of the end zone until midway through the fourth quarter when Tiger running back Bryce Gamer finally ended the 45-point Panther run with a one-yard TD dash. A North Wood punt gave the ball back to Warsaw, and Gamer eventually tacked on another meaningless score with a nice 27-yard run to make the final score 61-24 in favor of the Panthers. North Wood rushed for 228 yards, led by 106 yards and three TDs from Brayton Yoder and 46 yards and three more scores by Bronson Yoder. The pair also combined for six successful PAT runs. Bilinski passed for 262 yards and two scores, all in the first half. Bronson Yoder led all Panther receivers with six catches for 140 yards, while Minnich added six grabs for 67 yards and a touchdown. The Black Crunch defense was paced by the relentless Jacob Chupp, who had seven tackles including a sack. Minnich, Bronson Yoder, and Dylan Brugh also recorded sacks for North Wood. Warsaw managed 167 yards on the ground, led by 72 yards on 12 carries from McGarvey. The Tigers' vaunted passing attack was non-existent thanks to a stellar effort by the Black Crunch defense, as Jensen completed just 5 of 22 passes for 63 yards and was picked off twice. Jeremy David made nine tackles to lead the battered Warsaw defense. North Wood (8-0, 6-0 NLC) travels to Plymouth on Oct. 14 for the final regular-season game against the Rockies (4-4, 3-3 NLC). The sectional pairings are also out, and the Panthers drew a first-round home game against struggling Columbia Gty (2-6) on Oct. 21. • NORTHWOOD 61, WARSAW 24 At Andrews Field, Nappanee Warsaw: 10 00 14 —24 North Wood: 16 38 7 0— 61 First quarter NW Bronson Yoder 1 run (Bronson Yoder run) NW Brayton Yoder 14 run (Brayton Yoder run) W Devin Street 21 pass from Michael Jensen (Andrew Mevis kick) W Mevis 43 yd.
