Panthers crush Memorial 52-21
By Steve Sittler Correspondent NORTHWOOD Trey Bilirtski threw for three touchdowns and ran for another as the Class 4A, No. 2-ranked North Wood Panthers pummeled Elkhart Memorial 52-21 on a soggy homecoming night at Andrews Field. Combined with Concord's upset win over Plymouth, the victory put the Panthers in position to clinch their first Northern Lakes Conference (NLC) title since 2004 when the Warsaw Tigers come to town on Oct. 7 for North Wood's Senior Night. After punting the ball away on their first possession, North Wood's Black Crunch defense stopped Memorial on fourth down and took over at the Charger 44-yard line. Six straight running plays put the ball at the 15-yard line and Bilinski then hit Payton Bear for a TD strike and ran the PAT in himself to give the Panthers an 8-0 lead. Memorial answered quickly, scoring on their second play from scrimmage on a 74-yard touchdown pass from Nathan Williams to Andrew Goodman and when the PAT pass was also good, the score was tied at 8-all with just over three minutes remaining in the first period. After driving to the Charger 11-yard line, North Wood turned the ball over on downs but quickly forced a Memorial punt that was returned 20 yards by Drew Minnich to near midfield. Seven plays later, the Panthers were in the end zone again, this time on an 18-yard pass from Bilinski to DeAndre Smart, who tipped the ball away from a Charger defender and made the grab in the back of the end zone. Bilinski's second PAT run of the night made it 16-8 Panthers early in the second quarter. After forcing yet another Memorial punt, North Wood took over on their own 27-yard line and promptly marched 73 yards in just seven plays, with a Bilinski to Minnich 26-yard completion being the key play on the drive. North Wood senior captain Caleb Newcomer shouts encouragement to his teammates in North Wood's 52-12 homecoming win over Elkhart Memorial. took the pigskin the final four yards for the score and then added the two-point PAT run himself to push North Wood's lead to 24-8, which held up to halftime. To their credit, Memorial continued to battle after the half, taking the second-half kickoff and driving 57 yards in eight plays, capped by a 6-yard touchdown scamper by Charger running back Mark Brownlee. The PAT passed failed but the Panther lead was cut to 24-14. It stayed that way for barely 10 seconds as Brayton Yoder returned the Charger kickoff 75 yards for a touchdown and ran in another PAT, rebuilding the Panther lead to 32-14. The Black Crunch defense then forced a three-and-out by Memorial and North Wood took over at their own 44-yard line. Just two plays later, Bilinski bolted 54 yards for a score and although the run failed, the Panthers held a commanding 38-14 lead with six minutes left in the third period. The Chargers answered with a long drive that finally ended at the North Wood fiveyard line when Memorial fumbled on a fourth-down rush attempt. Bilinski then led a masterful 95-yard drive that featured a mix of runs and passes and ended with a four-yard strike to Smart to make it 45-14 Panthers after Adler Chamberlain's PAT kick. A surprise on-side kick then gave the ball back to North Wood near midfield and Landen Gessinger, tak-
