Panthers squeak by behind Black Crunch D

By Steve Sitti.er Correspondent NORTHWOOD On a night where North Wood's vaunted offensive attack sputtered and coughed, senior linebacker Drew Minnich and his mates on the Black Crunch defense came to the rescue with a shutout as the Panthers topped Northridge 14-0 in a Northern Lakes Conference (NLC) battle. North Wood came into the game ranked No. 2 in the state in Class 4A and averaging nearly 550 yards and 48 points per game, but managed just 260 yards of offense and 14 points against a stubborn Raider defense. After a holding penalty killed the game-opening Panther drive and forced a punt, Mirinich made his first huge play of the night by intercepting a Raider pass after the ball was tipped at the line of scrimmage by Jake Stump. North Wood took over at the Northridge 28-yard line, and, three plays later, Trey Bilinski hit Landen Gessinger on a swing pass and the fleet-footed junior raced to the end zone from 15 yards out. Bilinski was stuffed on the two-point PAT run attempt, but the Panthers led 6-0 barely two minutes into the game. The two defenses then took over for the remainder of the half, as the next two possessions by both teams ended with punts. Finally, with just over five minutes left in the half, North Wood got a break when Dylan Brugh recovered a fumble after a completed Raider pass at the Panther 32-yard line, the deepest penetration the Raiders would make all night. The Panthers could not take advantage, however, as three plays later Bilinski was intercepted by Northridge comerback Josh Schalbach. Both teams punted once more before the half, and North Wood took a slim 6-0 lead to the locker room. Northridge managed two first downs on its opening drive of the second half but stalled after reaching midfield, punting the ball back to the Panthers, who took over deep in their own territory at the 6-yard line. A rare big play then got North Wood out of the hole when Bronson Yoder bolted 44 yards off the right side, giving the Panthers

North Wood's Drew Minnich (on ground with ball) intercepts a pass on Northridge's first play from scrimmage as teammates Payton Bear (34) and Bronson Yoder (9) celebrate. The pick set up the Panthers'first TD in their 14-0 win over the Raiders.

a first down in Raider territory. After six straight running plays put the ball at the Northridge 24-yard line, Bilinski lofted a pass to the end zone which looked like it was going to be intercepted, but the ball bounced off the hands of Raider safety Julius Graber and into the waiting arms of North Wood wideout DeAndre Smart. Yoder punched in the two-point PAT run, and the Panthers had a bit of breathing room at 14-0 with 2:36 remaining in the third quarter. • The Black Crunch defense then continued its spectacular play, forcing a pair of Raider punts one thanks to a third-down sack by Minnich and killing a third series with a third-down tackle by Brugh and a fourth-down pass breakup by Brayton Yoder, all without yielding a single Northridge first down. The Panther offense could not capitalize, however, driving deep into Raider territory twice but turning the ball over on downs both times, but it did not matter thanks to the stout North Wood defense. The Panthers took over for the last time near midfield with 4:17 to play and finally managed to grind out a pair of first downs to run out the clock and seal the victory. North Wood finished with just 169 yards on the ground, with Bronson Yoder leading the way with 86 yards on 14 carries. Bilinski was a season-low 7 of 19 through the air for just 90 yards,

ing for the Black Crunch defense, making 11 tackles including two sacks to go with his key interception. Stump and Payton Bear added six stops each, while Brugh had four tackles and a fumble recovery. The Raider offense was even more anemic than North Wood, rushing for only 96 yards on 33 carries, an average of less than 3 yards per tote. North Wood (6-0, 4-0 NLC) remains at Andrews Field on Sept. 30, welcoming NLC foe Elkhart Memorial (2-4, 0-4 NLC) for the annual homecoming game.
