Lady Panthers back on top at Warsaw Sectional

By James Costello Sports Editor WARSAW - When the rain started at Stonehenge Golf Gub ( North Wood's girls golf team was already prepared. Unfazed by a roughly one-and-a-half weather delay at the Warsaw Girls Golf Sectional, the Lady Panthers cruised to the championship with a dominant 340 score, while Wawasee finished runner-up with a 385, and Warsaw was third with a 391 on its home course Saturday. "One thing we talk about is, no matter what tournament we're going into, expect delays. I don't care if the forecast is sunny, no chance of rain, you never know," said North Wood head coach Adam Yoder. "So when they get told there's a delay, they just mark their ball and they go sit. We don't talk about golf at all during the delay. Whatever they want to do if they want to sleep, play on their iPhone, play cards they just do whatever they want. And they know when it's time to go back out and play that you go back out and play. We feel like if we're mentally tough through those delays we have an advantage in the field." The Panthers' top two both finished in the top three overall at the tournament as top slighter Summer Stillson shot 80, and Mackenzie Weaver broke 80 with a 79

for individual runner-up honors behind Rochester's Kinley Lingenfelter and her 4-under 67. "It 7 s nice to have your second player capable of being in the top two or three in the tournament," said Yoder. "Summer struggled a little bit today with her swing... and for her to come in with an 80, it was pretty good considering she wasn't hitting it very well. Mackenzie was just solid all day long. She didn't putt as well as she'd like, but you can't complain about it when you shoot 79.1 think she shot 73 earlier this year, but other than that she's been pretty consistent between 78, 79 and 82, 83 so the fact that we know we can pretty much count on her to be up in the top 10 or the top 15 of the field to go with Summer, it's a lot of confidence for the younger kids behind them." All of North Wood's top four placed in the top 10 individually at sectional, as Madison Richner turned in an 88 for fourth place, and Abby Slabaugh was 10th with a score of 93. Alaina Benjamin shot 95 for the Panthers' fifth score. Saturday's championship represented something of a reprisal for the Panthers, who were also heavily favored last year but came up short of Wawasee's 332 score. "It's a little redemption. We kind of thought we were the favorites last year, and

not that we played bad, Wawasee just played really good," said Yoder. "That was kind of a lesson that we had to learn, that you are supposed to play really, really good to win sectional. We talked about just do your job. We're a team that should shoot in the 340 s out here, and they did they shot 340. So it was great. They came out with the mindset, let's just do what we're supposed to do, and everything will work out fine. And we didn't necessarily do what we were supposed to do last year." With their second sectional championship in the past three years in tow,
