Panthers move to 2-0 with 54-6 mauling of Fairfield

By Steve Sutler Correspondent GOSHEN Trey Bilinski threw for four touchdowns and ran for another in less than three quarters of action as the North Wood Panthers smashed Fairfield 54-6 in non-conference football action. The Panthers have now outscored the Falcons 155-13 in three games since the "rivalry" was initiated in 2014. Just as they did in 2015, Fairfield opened the game with a long scoring drive, marching 78 yards in 13 plays and chewing more than six minutes off the game clock. No single play in the drive gained more than 8 yards until the last one, a 19-yard TD strike from Falcon quarterback Zac Lantz to wide receiver Caleb Rodriguez. The PAT was wide left, but the Falcons led 6-0. North Wood promptly made the joy short-lived for the Falcon faithful as the Panthers took just five plays to tie the score. A 34-yard run by Bilinski set up a 27-yard Bilinski to Bronson Yoder touchdown pass, and Payton Bear rumbled in for the two-point PAT to make it 8-6 Panthers. The Falcons then nearly struck again on a 70-yard completion from Lantz to Connor Kitsoa but Yoder and DeAndre Smart ran Kitson down at the 3-yard line to save a touchdown. Fairfield then shot itself in the foot twice on back-to-back false start penalties, forcing a field goal attempt that was wide left. North Wood took over at the 20-yard line after the missed field goal and quickly scored again on a seven-play, 80-yard drive as the second quarter began. A 43-yard bomb from Bilinski to Smart was the scoring play, as Smart made a beautiful spin move at about the 10-yard line to elude two Falcon tacklers and dance into the end zone. Adler Chamberlain tacked on the PAT, and the Panthers led 15-6. After the Black Crunch defense forced a three-and-out, North Wood scored again, taking less than two minutes to drive 69 yards as Bilinski and Yoder hooked up again on a 17-. yard TD pass. Chamberlain's PAT made it 22-6 Panthers with just under eight minutes remaining in the half. To their credit, the Falcons refused to roll over and die, going on a long drive that eventually died at the North Wood 29-yard line due, once again, to self-inflicted wounds in the

form of silly penalties. Panther wideout Landen Gessinger then broke several tackles on a 45-yard bubble screen reception to set up North Wood deep in Falcon territory, and, two plays later, Brayton Yoder burst off tackle and bounced outside for a 19-yard TD run to increase the Panther lead to 28-6. After another Fairfield punt, North Wood added a final score in the last minute and half before the break, as Bilinski completed several medium-length passes mixed in with a key third-down conversion run by Bear. With just 15 seconds to play, Bilinski threw his fourth touchdown pass of the half, this one a 7-yarder to Smart in the back right comer of the end zone, and North Wood led 35-6 at the half. Unfortunately for the hosts, North Wood received the sec-ond-half kickoff and quickly drove 64 yards in eight plays for yet another score. The key play on the drive was a 28-yard fourth down run by Bilinski, and Jacob Chupp toted the pigskin the final yard to put the Panthers in front 42-6. x On the first Fairfield possession of the second half, a Falcon fumble was pounced on by Chupp at the 12-yard line, and, two plays later, Bilinski raced in from 7 yards out, making it 48-6 Panthers after the PAT attempt was no good. Things continued to get worse for the hosts, as they turned the ball over again on a fumble in their own territory. The everpresent Chupp scooped up the pigskin and ran it back for an apparent score, but an illegal block penalty wiped out the TD. North Wood maintained possession, however, and Gessinger taking over for Bilinski at quarterback ran 26 yards for another apparent TD on the first play that was also called back on a North Wood penalty. Not to be deterred, Gessinger ran the ball on three of the next four plays, the final one a 3-yard TD dash that put North Wood in front 54-6. The fourth quarter was anti-climactic, with the Panthers substituting freely and allowing the starters a well-deserved rest. Two Fairfield drives and one North Wood drive ended with punts, as the reserves enjoyed their moment under the lights. The Panthers finished with 202 yards on the ground, led by 77 from Bilinski, most of it on two huge runs. Bilinski completed 15 of his 21 pass attempts for a whopping 281 yards and four scores, nearly all of it in the first half. Bronson Yoder led all
