Standoff, from front
of Child Services (DSC), and learned that Hummel had active drug-related warrants in Marsnall and Starke counties. Police and DCS returned to the home to collect clothes for the children, and observed a man in the back of the home. The house was evacuated and Nappanee police called Elkhart County Sherriff's Department Emergency Services Unit (ESU) and the Elkhart Police Department for use of its robotic camera, after repeated attempts to lure Hummel from the home proved unsuccessful. After the robot searched the majority of the home, around 5:15 p.m., ESU entered the nome and deployed OC gas into the crawl space where they believed that Hummel was hiding. After a short time, Hummel gave himself up and the standoff ended without incident. Nappanee Police Chief Steve Rulli said Hummel was charged with several counts of resisting law enforcement, and the neglect of a dependent, along with the Marshall and Starke warrants.
