Vacation highlights historic Mideast locations without violence
By Merrie Chapman Staff Writer NAPPANEE Pick up a newspaper, turn on the nightly news or visit the internet, and you will hear each day of terrorist attacks, waring countries and other violence originating in the Mideast. It isn't a welcoming thought to travel among that violence for any reason political or personal. However, this summer Nappanee native Chris Martin set out on a vacation which involved traveling some of the historical sites found in worldwide news and located in that region. One amazing, and familiar, stop was at a wall often seen on television along with images of Jewish people praying while standing to face the structure. It is what most have come to know as "The Wailing Wall". It is also known as the Western Wall—and the Kotel Wall. The site is of significance to the Jewish people but is so well-known worldwide that people from nearly every religion have heard of it, or seen photos and news coverage of the Jewish people visiting there. "The term 'Wailing Wall' is actually a negative term the Arabs used to make fun of the Jewish people who come and cry (as they pray) because their temple there was destroyed," shares Martin. She acknowledges that term is what most people recognize, but encourages the public not to use the offensive wording. "The southern steps of that temple are still there and we walked up all of those stairs," she adds while exhaling a deep breath and laughing to signify the physical demands of both the ascent and descent on the historic path. "Another highlight of my trip was writing a prayer and putting it in a crack at the Western Wall," said Martin. She explained that is what the Jewish people (and many visitors from all nations/ religions) do when they visit the wall. "I asked Stan (tour guide) what happens to all those notes, he said they are periodically removed and buried—which is a sign of respect (because they aren't read or destroyed)." LOCATION OF MILITARY SIGNIFICANCE The world traveler describes visiting a secret factory where bullets were made while the area was under the rule of Britain. "But the British never knew about it (the ammunition designed to war against them)" shares an amused Chris Martin.

NEW OUTLOOK She describes visiting a Detention Camp where Jewish people were "detained" while traveling to their homeland of Israel. Then her group stopped at the Holocaust Museum, in Yad Veshem, where she was shocked by an inscription among the artifacts and displays. "I was impacted most by a quote I saw there," shares Martin. It said, 'There were not six million Jews killed during that time; there was one Jew killed six million times'." Perhaps this was in reference to the Jewish people being one in their hearts, and the eyes of their God. Therefore every Jewish person killed was the group as a whole perishing over and over again. Each of the village banks were shocked when President Franklin D. Roosevelt ordered all financial institutions locked up to the public in March 1933. This national incident — known as the Bank Holiday of 1933 left people from that time period screaming "show me the money" long before the iconic words became known in the 1996 film, Jerry McGuire, which featured actor Tom Cruise. LEARNING, EXPERIENCING CULTURAL DIFFERENCES When asked what are the differences 'between America and Israel, factual information discrepancies is the first thing that comes to the tourist's mind. "I was always taught that the capital of Israel is Jerusalum, not Tel Aviv," Chris Martin responds with a gentle laugh while still acknowledging the change.
Photo by Merrie Chapman RIGHT: The First National Bank opened in Nappanee during the month of June 1907. It was started by 40 stockholders-among them 30 farmers and 10 others. Despite good intentions and a strong start, the bank did not survive when President Franklin D. Roosevelt closed all national banks to the public in 1933. "Embrace the Pace''—is reflected throughout the community. The city adopted the logo in 2003. It represents continual efforts made by city leaders and residents in building on the city's heritage, historic landmarks and ideals, while still conforming to the ever changes needs of residents today. Martin discovered cultural differences while dining with a Jewish Rabbi during the Shabbat/Sabbath — which is celebrated on Saturday, unlike the Sunday Sabbath on Christian calendars. "I learned that every Friday evening they turn off all communications even cell phones and all their stores are closed," she said in surprise. "They do that from sundown on Friday until sundown on Saturday. The Christian traveler also admired the prayers at dinnertime. She described the Rabbi praying over each of his seven children individually before the meal. GO FORTH IN PEACE Despite recent negative headline news stones, Martin describes having been filled with peace about the trip, and visiting both Biblical and historical world sites. Those who organized her vacation trip are planning another visit to Israel in Apnl 2018 a trip she is already saving toward with plans to again make the journey.
