Lady Panthers rally, fall short in sectional semi By Kyle Hilliard Correspondent AKRON The North Wood Lady Panthers were ousted in the Sectional 21 semi-finals by a hot-shooting Fairfield Lady Falcons team, 62-48, last Friday. Fairfield started the game with a 14-2 run, missing only three shots and holding the Lady Panthers to only l-of-12 shooting during the run. Fairfield's ball movement proved to be problematic for North Wood as they were consistently able to get open looks throughout the first quarter and built a 17-9 lead after one. "It just seemed like we were a step too slow or a step too fast, and they were in perfect rhythm and in sync," said North Wood coach Adam Yoder. "Everything becomes a lot easier when you put the ball in the basket. For us, that was something we didn't do tonight very well for a long time." With about three minutes to go in the first half and North Wood trailing 23-14, Fairfield caught fire again, going on an 11-2 run to dose out the half leading 34-16. In the third, The Black Swish started to chip away at the Falcons' lead, cutting the defidt to 38-24, but then Fairfield got hot again, scoring 12 straight points. North Wood added five more at the end of the quarter but still trailed 50-29. "We weren't there at die beginning. That team in blue .brought a lot of energy, and they hit a lot of shots. They hit. diem, and we didn't," said Yoder. "We've gotten away with ; it a few times this year, not being ready, but being able to See Lady Panthers, page A 3

Panthers jump back on victory train
By Steve Sittler Correspondent DUNLAP/NEW CARLISLE—Showing no ill effects from the disappointing loss to Warsaw a week earlier, the Class 3A No. 4-ranked North Wood Panthers went into McCuen Gym at Concord and destroyed the evil Minutemen 65-32 in one of the most lopsided contests in the decades-long rivalry between the two schools. North Wood then finished off the week with a near identical 67-38 pasting of New Prairie in a make-up of a game postponed from January by inclement weather. North Wood 65, Concord 32 The game at Concord looked to have all the potential for a blowout, with Concord struggling at 5-10 and having no seniors on the roster, and the Panthers highly-ranked in the state with a spariding 13-2 record. Apparently the fans thought so as well, as a dismal crowd showed up, including barely 50 students from the two schools combined. North Wood came out of the gate with a full-court zone press, with head coach Aaron Wolfe running seven players in and out of the game in rapid fashion, two tactics that have been uncharacteristic of the 2015-16 Panthers. The unexpected approach paid off as Concord scored the first basket of the game, then turned the ball over multiple times, leading to easy baskets for North Wood on a 9-0 Panther run. Vinny Miranda tossed in seven first-period points for the Panthers, while DK Fox scored six as North Wood led 19-6 at the first stop. The Panthers continued to harass the hapless Minutemen in the second period, going on an 8-2 run to start the quarter. The larcenous Miranda picked up four steals, most leading to easy baskets and boosting North Wood to a 34-15 halftime advantage. In the third quarter, the Panthers took the press off and appeared to be on cruise control, but after several wild Concord shots found the mark, Miranda took offense and went on a tear, pouring in 12 more points in the period. A blistering run by North Wood in the final three minutes pushed the lead to 54-23 as the Panther defense limited the Minutemen to less than 10 points for the third straight quarter. The fourth quarter was pretty much garbage time for North Wood, as Wolfe began clearing his bench with more than six minutes remaining in the contest. Everyone on the varsity roster got into the game, and all but three players ended up scoring at least two points as the Panthers rolled to the easy win. Miranda led all scorers with 23 points and also added seven rebounds and a whopping six steals. Fox finished with 10 points and 12 rebounds, while Luke Zurcher, Trey Bilinski, and Caleb Lung each scored seven points for North Wood. Concord junior Denzel Haliburton was the only Minuteman in double figures with 10 points, while classmate Cedric Mitchell contributed eight points. • NORTHWOOD 65, CONCORD 32 At McCuen Gym, Dunlap North Wood: 19 34 54 65 Concoid: 6 15 23 32 NORTHWOOD (65): Braxton Linville 31-2 7, Luke Zurcher 1 04) 2, Vincent Miranda 10 3-3 23, Brad Delio 1 0-0 2, Chad Sellers 1 04) 3, Caleb Glick 1 04) 2, Dakiyron Fox 34-11 10, Jared Hoffman 0 0-0 0, Ryne Ewald 0 0-0 0, Caleb Lung 3 1-1 7, Trey Bilinski 3 1-2 7, Luke Holland 004)0, Nathan Schmitt 1 OO 2; Totals: 27 10-19 65

Against the Minutemen, North Wood rallied after a sluggish first half and tied the game on two Luke Holland free throws with 12 seconds left in regulation. In the extra session, Brad Delio and Jared Hoffman combined for six points to give North Wood the lead, but it took a tie-up by freshman Kaden Gongwer and two free throws by Caleb Glick to seal the win at the end. Glick finished with 17 points to lead all scorers while Hoffman added nine for the winners. Concord was paced by 13 points from freshman Luke Shoemaker, while sophomore Matt Auger drilled in 11 points. The New Prairie contest was much easier, as North Wood jumped out to an 18-6 lead after one quarter and never looked back. Gongwer tossed in 10 points to lead a balanced North Wood attack, with Holland adding nine and Hoffman, Glide, and Ryne Ewald scoring seven each. Landen Gessinger and See Panthers, page A 3
