Winner, winner, chicken dinner

Winner, winner, chicken dinner! I know a lot of folks have been having fun doing some dreaming, most of it tied to the recent billion and a half dollar lottery jackpot that has served as a spur toward buying tickets nationwide. I'm not one for buying lottery tickets. A buck in the hand is worth a billion that you never actually get to spend. Plus if I won the lottery I'd do something foolish like pay off our mortgage, buy another book, and then show up for work the next day. I can't help it. I love what I do. Having said all that, 1 won four bucks fair and square, possibly because someone else didn't want to scoop out chump change. That's four dollars, as in 400 pennies, free and clear. It happened like this. My oldest son Francisco and I went to see the Buddy Holly musical that passed through South Bend. It was a good time, although Francisco had to have been the youngest person there, and I was only 4 when Buddy Holly died in a plane crash so I don't remember anything about it. But we both love his music, so even though there wasn't much drama involved in the piece it was still a lot of fun to listen to the songs. Anyway, as we left the parking garage I handed Francisco the ticket and 20 bucks. The charge was six bucks. Well, some people must have been confused and left their change, because we scooped out 18 dollar coins from the change slot, so we were four bucks ahead of the game. The best thing about dollar coins

Most of us don't think about the fact that what you eat and drink determines how you feel physically as well as mentally. Healthy eating means making half your plate vegetables and fruits and from my experiences you have to plan to make this happen. With all the available food choices you

have to be disciplined to practice health eating. Healthy eating means you will plan meals which also means you will make the most of your food dollars. Food prices have increased and even though fuel prices have decreased I don't see food prices being lowered. When I write about meal planning I am writing about vyith mmmnniraHnn making the most of megrbCejpf electronic cdupons, and placing fhemeal plans in writing or on the computer so everyone is aware of the plan and can help out. Research shows that family meals have always been important and are more important than ever. Meal planning make sense as it helps get members involved in the planning, shopping, and healthier eating by utilizing MyPlate, making the most of food dollars, preparation of food and then helping with meal clean up. This all helps with improving family communications. The ideal meal would be one that's appealing and nutritious as well as easy and quick to cook. These kinds of meals can only happen for you and your family if you plan ahead and have the ingredients in the cupboards, refrigerator or freezer. This means you must have to a plan and the plan should be one that everyone is a part of. If you want to eat healthier and stretch your food dollars then you need to buy basic or raw food ingredients. As much as possible use store brands and the items in the sale flyers. The costly problem in using convenience foods

is that you get to think about history when you check to see what you got.. First of all, there were four Sacagawea dollars. That always makes me think of the Lewis and dark Expedition, and how big this country really is, and how good it is to honor a Native American. There was also a Susan B. Anthony dollar coin, a person well worth honoring. It's dated 1979, the year Francisco was bom, so I think I'll pass it along to him. I was pleased to get four George Washington coins. The other day one of my grandsons asked me if he was worthy of the fame he received and I answered certainly. He set a good example by refusing power after winning the Revolutionary War, and once he was convinced to stand as president he insisted on stepping down after two terms instead of serving for life as some expected he would.. He was also the only slave owning Founding Father who actually freed his slaves upon his death. Well, every coin told a story. The Lincoln dollar commemorates one of our three greatest presidents and you can assign him to any of the top three spots as far as I'm concerned. There were two James K. Polk coins (Loser), one James Madison (pretty

have also shared that you rarely have more than 30 minutes for meal preparation. So this means you need to plan meals, cook ahead on the weekends and you also have to have other family members help. Making the most of meal prep time is the challenge. The approach I suggest you take depends on the total amount of time you have for m<?4preparationij)feuy time includes the steps that spniepne S preparation, which often requires ypur other family member's full-time or part-time attention. The total time refers to how long it takes to get a meal prepared from start to finish. I think an example would help me to explain. In my example I am also going to use small appliances as they will allow you to work smarter not harder and use little energy. Baking or cooking a whole chicken takes very little active time on your part. If you are short on time the whole chicken is not a good choice unless you have planned ahead and put it in the slow cooker in the morning. Then when your family members arrive home the meal is almost ready. This example really shows how planning ahead helps to eat healthy, make the most of your food dollars, and have a great meal with planned over's for lunches or other meals. If you want to do more than think about eating healthier and meal planning it makes sense that you and your family begin by getting organized. Having the discipline to eating healthier and practicing meal planning can be a part of a healthier you for you and your family.

good), one Ulysses S. Grant (great and underrated), one James Garfield (assassinated, wasn't he?), one William Henry Harrison (Achoo! Caught a cold at his inauguration and died), one Rutherford B. Hayes (stolen election), and one Franklin Pierce (loser). That's a lot of history jangling around in my pocket.. There's no use collecting these things. They're about as rare as glass. Each one of them is worth exactly a dollar. And they're fun to spend because lots of folks think you're cheating them at first, handing them quarters instead of dollars, and then looking at them suspiciously because some people don't believe you when you tell them they're cash money. Most of all it reminds me of what it means to be an American. Because there have been many attempts to replace our paper dollars, which wear out pretty quickly, with coins that last a lot longer, in order to save money, but mostly it doesn't work because Americans don't want to bother with coins of any sort. In other countries they just pull the paper money out of circulations and force you to use the larger denomination coins. But we do what we feel like when it comes to stuff like that. I spent my first three dollars to go swimming during the open pool time at North Wood High School on Sunday. The lifeguard didn't argue with me at all. He just took the coins and smiled. I smiled too. Frank Ramirez is the Senior Pastor of the Union Center Church of the Brethren.

Hot rods and the long way‘round

"She's my little deuce coupe, you don't know what I got." Those were the lyrics that were coming from my car stereo a few days ago as I

was driving to an auto parts store to pick up a set of brakes for my '97 Skylark. As I pulled into the parking lot, I saw something that made me lower the volume a bit and consider the meaning of the song I was just listening to: Import tuners. The sight of three or four highly modded (modified) Nissans, Hondas and Toyotas made me ask myself a singular question, and I still haven't come to a reasonable answer. That question was "whatever happened to the hot rodder?" You know who I am talking about. Watch any movie set in the 1950 s and you're bound to see him. Replete with greasy Levis, slicked-back hair and the always crisp white T-shirt sleeves rolled up and holding a pack of cigarettes thg hot rodder was an iconic image of 1950 s Middle America. They skipped class, never attended high school dances and rarely if ever strayed too far from their chosen rides ...hot rods. Just think Arthur Fonzarelli. What is a hot rod? Well, for the uninitiated, a hot rod was simply an everyday car that a backyard mechanic modified to his personal tastes in his free time. But there is more to it than that alone. What defines a hot rod in the purest form, and, in some ways, a hot rodder, is the method with which the hot rod was built. A traditional hot rod was built using whatever parts a hot rodder could scrounge together with the little money he had. Most if not all unnecessary parts were stripped off the car to reduce weight, and tne emphasis was on power as much as it was on personal style. But something changed in the last 60 years. As time wore on, custom car modification became more and more about style, flair and showoff-y-ness and less about that intimate touch that hot rodders from years past treated their rides with. Today a majority of the work that goes into a custom car see Honda Civic is done by professionals in near-hermetically sealed garages, and the price tag reflects that. Somewhere between 1955 and 2016 SSOO port jobs morphed into $15,000 paint jobs, and I think we are worse for it. Here is why... To put it straight between the eyes, no one learns from work they don't do. I understand that cars today are infinitely more complex than the hot rods of years gone by, but it is the hot rodders of yesterday that went on to build the technological marvels drive now. And how did they learn their skills? Well, they studied their medium, took things apart and were forced by lack of money and availability to learn how to put them back together. That would still be the case today, if it wasn't sol thp than to do Tt yoUft®fif/ eJcpenerice, I wouldn't know a quarter of what I know about engines, cars and motorcycles today if I hadn't torn something apart without tne know-how to repair it. That's how I learned, trial by fire, and I'm glad I did. Another hangover from our loss of 'do-it-yourself' tenacity is the personal touch factor. Sure, you can say that a custom paint job and $40,000 engine rebuild and install was your idea thus it is your personal touch, but someone else doing the work takes a certain element out of the process, and that element is the feeling of "I did that." Again, I can attest that no project car or motorcycle looks as good as the one you can say you rolled your sleeves up, got greasy and Frankenstein-ed together by yourself. The last point I can make is the point of patience. When I built my first motorcycle, a 2003 Honda ACE 750, into a modem retro-mod, I did it myself and, well, it took time —a lot of time. In fact, the whole process lasted about 3 years, and I wouldn't shave a second off that timeframe even if I could. Why, you ask? It's because I learned to be more patient. If you can drop your car off at a major garage and expect it to be done and modified to your liking in, say, a month, you don't learn that sometimes the sweetest fruits hang the highest. Basically, I don't have a problem with what import tuner cars are, I have a problem with what they aren't. Rather you love them or hate them, they ain't no hot rod and that's a crying shame, because you'd be surprised what you can learn when you take the long way 'round.
