By David M. Palmer Assistant Editor NAPPANEE —It has been two years since the North Wood girls basketball team had a change of coaches, but the girls and their coaching staff have nothing but success in their sights. Now in its second season after the retirement of former head coach Steve Neff, who announced his retirement from the program before the 2013-14 season, the North Wood girls basketball team is continuing to keep success on and off the court its primary focus. Former junior varsity coach Adam Yoder stepped into the head coach role after Neff's retirement, and the girls have seen growth and success in his two seasons at the helm. According to Yoder, the chance to follow Coach Neff comes with certain pressures but also with a challenge that he is more than willing to take on. "The outside expectations on our program are pretty high," Yoder said. "That has a lot to do with Coach Neff's success. He coached here for 37 years and won 653 games; that's pretty impressive." But, according to Yoder, living up to the legacy of Neff is not the focus of his program. While Neff left a lasting impression on the North Wood girls team, Yoder maintains that his program is dedicated to improving players’ level of play with every practice, regardless of the expectations. "Coach Neff was never worried about that kind of stuff," Yoder said. "He was worried about getting better every day and getting ready for the tournament at the end of the year,

ketball team won the Northern Lakes Conference championship, only losing in double overtime in a sectional game against a Tippecanoe Valley team that went on to reach the 3A state championship game. After his firet season as head coach last year, Yoder has had several players go on to join Division I college programs, a testament to both his and Neff's coaching. But Yoder looks at his past and his time under coach Neff as one of the reasons he and his team have the success that they do. "I'd been with coach Neff long enough that I'd been around a lot of these players, and I had them when they were younger," Yoder said of his time as the freshman and JV coach under Neff. "It's been a nice transition in that sense." According to Yoder, the transition from one head coach to another was easy for the players and the staff to adapt to, with the bulk of changes only predicated by the type of players the team has rather than the switch in coaches. Speaking to the differences in the team from the time Neff coached to now, Yoder said that the primary differences come from the size and type of players he has versus the size and type that were successful for the program under Neff. "We've changed some of our strategy and the type of basketball vye play, bqt that's more dictated by the type of players mat we nave now compared to coach Neff," Yoder said. "Coach Neff, for the longest time, had a lot of really solid post players. We just don't have a lot of the girls right now, so that has kind of forced the change more than anything." Despite the changes to the program in the last two years, Yoder and his Panthers only aim to keep pushing themselves and raise the bar as high as they can. As of the time of this article, the North Wood Panthers girls basketball team is 12-7 in their season and ranked 74 overall in the state.
