if that seems like what the student needs. It's whatever we think will work best for the student." The students and their mentors interact during pre-determined times and get to know one another and develop a relationship through playing games, eating lunch together and generally spending quality time. Once paired with a student, a mentor will follow that student's progress throughout the years and remain the child's mentor until they leave Woodview for middle school. "It can be a little difficult at the end of fifth grade, because the mentoring program doesn't continue on with them," Wiggins said. "But a lot of our mentors stay in touch with their students after." Wiggins said that the program has had a drastic effect

on the students who have been involved over the last 10 years. From improved grades to better .social skills, the students who participate in the mentoring program often come away better off than when they started. Wiggins also noted that the program has been such a success at Woodview that students who are not in need of a mentor have begun asking her if they, too, can join the mentoring program because of how much fun students say it is. Andrea Grove, a mentor for a third-grade girl at Woodview, said that she enjoys the program because of her desire to help kids in need, and that the mentoring program was the perfect way to do that. "I'm interested in helping kids that need a little bit of encouragement," Grove

said. "I love kids, so I found out about this mentoring program through a friend and they took me on." According to Grove, she and her student play games, color, draw and talk about whatever the student wants. The goal is to make the student comfortable and inspire confidence in the student where they might not have it. Grove said that she is in her second year as a mentor, and plans to stay with her student until she leaves for middle school. "The main thing I notice is that we are building a relationship," Grove said. "She trusts me and we get excited to see each other. I just want to be her friend and a good confidant." The names of students involved in the mentoring program have been purposely withheld for reasons of privacy.

30 degree temperatures and we don't have a lot of snow cover, because the major effect of winter is actually the land drying out." Another problem area when winter weather is so back-and-forth is respiratory problems in both people and animals. The fluctuating air temperatures cause flair-ups in breathing problems, according to Burbrink. Respiratory issues are common in winter due to dry air conditions, and the flippant change in moisture throughout the beginning of this winter season has left much of Northern Indiana at a moisture deficit which we are just now starting to even out. Despite this year being a record El Nino

year, however, Burbrink isn't worried so far. "The people I've talked have said that we were behind on some moisture coming into the year," Burbrink said. "We were a little behind going into fall and winter, but were pretty much caught up now, We can't really say what is going to happen, and we will just have to wait and see. But we are okay for now." El Nino year or not, many just want to know if winter is going to stick around, or if they should be breaking out the suntan lotion and bathing suits early this year. As for now, however, it all seems to be up in the air the warm, cold, moist and dry air.
