DAT photo North Wood’s Andrea Tuttle goes up for two during a game with Wawasee last week.

By Steve Sittler Correspondent ROCHESTER Vinny Miranda scored 19 points and three other players hit double figures as the Class 3A fourth-ranked North Wood Panthers smashed Northern Lakes Conference (NLC) rival Wawasee 71-43 in Syracuse. The margin could have been greater if not for abysmal 40 percent free throw shooting by North Wood, but the win improved North Wood to 11-1 on the year, 2-0 and tied for first place in the NLC with unbeaten Warsaw. North Wood 71, Wawasee 43 On an unseasonably warm and rainy night in January, the Panthers got 2016 off on the right foot by bolting to a 7-0 lead from the opening tip and after a Wawasee basket, running off eight more points to make it 15-2 just four minutes into the game. Miranda scored seven points in the opening period and Braxton Linville added five, while D.K. Fox pounded the offensive glass, tearing down four offensive rebounds in the quarter, while the Panther defense allowed just six points to the Warriors. When the dust had settled, North Wood led 18-6 after the first eight minutes. The Panthers continued to pour it on in the second period, scoring the first 10 points and getting into the one-and-bonus at the 6:40 mark. Miranda continued his torrid shooting, hitting all five of his two-point attempts en route to nine more points as North Wood outscored Wawasee 20-9 in the quarter to take a 38-15 lead to the locker room. The third period belonged to Panther junior forward Trey Bilinski and senior super-sub Chad Sellers, who combined for 12 points to push the Panther lead to 56-22 with one quarter to play. Despite miserable (2-8) free throw shooting by North Wood, the lead increased thanks to the high-inten-sity Panther defense, as Wawasee finished the period with just seven points after six and nine in the first two stanzas. Luke Zurcher scored seven quick points in the fourth period after struggling with, foul trouble for most of the night, allowing North Wood codch Aaron Wolfe to begin clearing his bench with more than six minutes remaining in
