Panthers smash Triton but fall in Brownsburg Shootout

By Steve Sutler , Correspondent NAPPANEE/BROWNSBURG Luke Zurcher erupted for 17 points and Dakiyron "DK" Fox had another big dou-ble-double as the Class 3A third-ranked North Wood Panther boys basketball team pummeled Triton 64-43 on Friday, Dec. 4. On Saturday, however, the Panthers dropped their first game of the season, a 49-48 squeaker to Class 4A Fishers in the Brownsburg Shootout. North Wood 64, Triton 43 Playing in their first road game of the season, the Panthers came out with a smothering defense, holding Triton to just two field goals in the first quarter en route to a 22-8 advantage. Fox led the way with six first-period points while Zurcher and Vinny Miranda added five each. North Wood continued to pour it on in the second period, going on a 5-0 run to start the quarter and forcing the Trojans to foul, getting into the bonus situation just four minutes into the period. Triton improved slightly from the opening stanza, managing three field goals but still trailed the Panthers 39-15 at the halftime break, with Zurcher pouring in six more points. In the third quarter, the Trojans began to show a bit of life, scoring the first five points, but North Wood responded with an 8-0 run, primarily thanks to Fox who scored seven points and pulled down four rebounds. Gritty Triton guard Jordan Anderson kept his team clinically alive with 10 points in the period, including three treys, but the Panthers still led 55-31 with eight minutes to play. North Wood then switched on the cruise control, as the starters gradually exited to be replaced by the Panthers' capable bench. Sophomore Caleb Lung finished strong, ending the game with five points and five

Stevens 1 <M) 3. TOTALS 15 6-1043 3-pointers: North Wood 5 (Zurcher 3, Linville Miranda); Triton 7 (Anderson 4, Yeo, Pitney, Stevens). Fishers 49, North Wood 48 The successes of the past several seasons led to the Panthers being invited to participate in the Brownsburg Shootout, a threegame affair in which the Panthers squared off against the unbeaten Fishers Tigers, a Q ass 4A school located on the northeast side of Indianapolis. Despite a combined 39 points from the "Linny and Vinny Show" (Linville and Miranda), including seven made 3-pointers, the Panthers dropped a heartbreaking one-point decision to the Tigers. Turnovers and poor shooting doomed North Wood, as they coughed up the ball 17 times (a season high) and shot just 33 percent from 2-point range. Also hurting the Panthers was foul trouble for Fox, who played just 21 minutes and scored only three points. Fishers led at every stop, although never by more than four points in the hard-fought contest. Zach Eaton led the Tigers with 11 points and Lance Dollison and Cameron Wolter chipped in 10 points apiece for the victors. North Wood (3-1) travels to Westview on Dec. 10 to face the Warriors, then returns home on Saturday, Dec. 12 to battle county and sectional rival Fairfield. • FISHERS 49, NORTHWOOD 48 At Brownsburg Shootout Fishers: ' 14 21 36 49 North Wood: 11 17 33 48 NORTHWOOD (48): Braxton Linville 5 2-3 16, Luke Zurcher 1 0-0 2, Vincent Miranda 5 10-12 23, Chad Sellers 0 04) 0, Dakiyron Fox 1 1-2 3, Caleb Lung 0 0-1 1, Trey Bilinski 1 2-2 4.
