as the "tree" inside the sanctuary. He had already taken the Starling outdoors for brief periods but the cage was built to now house the bird outdoors full time. Inside his new home Indigo continued to grow learning to bathe in a water filled pizza pan, fly from the ground up into the floral covered shrub, hop from branch to branch and watch the world around him all while listening to other birds in the neighborhood. The Havilands still came out to feed, and visit, the rescued bird. MAKING NEW FRIENDS The next step was to introduce their feathered friend to life outside his cage. At first Indigo stayed close to his human hosts as he explored the yard and trees. Then he began visiting neighbors. The Havilands warn that Indigo likes to fly to people and nest on their shoulder or head momentarily as he's getting to know them.

It's temporary and the bird doesn't attack or hurt anyone. He simply examines them, and has been known to briefly examine hair with his beak as the Starling gets to know the people upon whom he has perched. One neighbor happily reported that wJule seated in his backyard enjoying warm spring weather, Indigo came to rest on his lap for a visit. "We just want people to know that about Indigo," said Valerie Haviland. "We don't want anyone to hurt him, or think he's going to attack them. Right now he just thinks everyone is his friend ." Another fear is that because the bird is so friendly someone may want to take him in as a pet. "We don't want him to wind up in a cage as somebody's pet," said Greg Haviland who pointed out that Indigo has already been introduced to his natural habitat, and it would be both cruel and hard for him to adjust to life

inside a cage fulltime. THE BIRD'S FUTURE While the Havilands call the bird Indigo, and continue to feed it when it returns, their goal is for the Starling to live as it was intended to live "just being a bird." While they refer to Indigo as 'Jiim' Greg Haviland reports that no one will know what sex the bird is until it grows older and they see whether or not the male marking associated with European Starlings will appear. As of June 6 Indigo had been gone three days the longest period since he began adventuring beyond his sanctuary. Area residents have reported seeing him as far away as Williams Street and it is assumed he will continue traveling further and further. It is hoped that Indigo will both return home for visits and find a flock of birds to blend into. The backyard sanctuary remains open to welcome the Starling home each and every time he might come home for a visit.
