I dunk I'd better make one dung dear right off the bat. My wife Jennie and I keep a gun on the kitchen counter and we're not afraid to use it. Now I'd better make one thing even dearer. The gun is less than an inch long and it goes with one of the Star Wars action figures that belonged to our children decades ago. Having just moved here to Nappanee, we've been busy unpacking bric-a-brac into our new home. And in one box we found this little plastic gun. We're keeping it safe on the counter until we find another box that is full of old battered and scratchedup Star Wars figures that hasn't turned up quite yet. Now we don't personally play with Star Wars action figures, but we still keep them, because every now and then a child comes over to visit, and if we discover they like die Star Wars movies we dump the contents of that box into the middle of the room.

He was twenty, and very lean. Brought together by the Lord in heaven. Their children, all boys, would number seven. A marriage of

fifty four years, With lots of good times, bad times, joy and tears. He passed on in nineteen eighty seven, A good man, I know he is in Heaven. She was still very much alive, At the golden age of seventy five. Her eyes remained as blue as the sky above, And in them, I could see all the love. That had got me through fifty plus years, Just the thought of her loss could bring me to tears. Now that you have taken her lord, and I can no longer see her face, I hope for my mom, you had a very special place

In all honesty as I write this column I really think I should be giving you ideas about preparing soup as the weather is damp and cold and really more like March. I do hope that by the time you are reading this the weather has warmed up, the sun is shining, you are cooking on the grill regularly and you have planted some spinach or lettuce seeds. With the cold weather I am all for turning on the oven and preparing some tasty comfort food! One of my favorite foods prepared in the oven is meatloaf. I am sure many of you have some memories of meatloaf growing up. One of my family meals as a child was meatloaf made with all lean beef, a baked* potato, baked beans that were baked in the small blue bowl, and a green salad. I am sure the dessert was fruit. I know from cooking conversations that most cooks have their own recipe. What I

After that we don't hear from them for hours. Once in a while one of the kids, or perhaps an adult, will look at the mound of much-loved and well-used toys and say, 'Too bad you didn't keep all those toys in the original packaging. They'd be worth a fortune by now." - The thing is, these toys have already made us riot, even though they may not be worth two cents. That's because there is no price you can put on the laughter and joy

am trying to write is that there are some basic ingredients that are always in the meatloaf but the amounts are not real accurate and some ingredients may even vary with what is in the refrigerator. So what ingredients are in your meat loaf? When I make ours I make tire most of my small food processor; cooking without it would definitely take more time. I like to use one cup of oatmeal in the meatloaf but I place half of it at a time in the processor and turn into a fine oat flour, then

repeat with the other half. Another key ingredient for me in meat loaf is an onion, you just have to have that flavor, even if you can't see the onion. So I the mini food processor to turn the onion into an onion slurry or puree. Again, I do this in two

of every child, whether one of our own or a visitor, who has had a fantastic time playing with Luke Skvwalker and Princess Leia and Han Solo for nour after how. Even if that means ow youngest son Jacob once jammed a Luke Skywalker irretrievably down the gullet of the Rancor Monster. It's still there. Jacob also buried the Lando Calrissian in a park in Culver City, California, and then forgot exactly where he put it. I hope some child found it and enjoyed it. Because to ow way of thinking, toys kept in the original packaging are not really toys. They're investments. You might make a good piece of change, but one thing I've learned over tfie years is that money comes and money goes. It's the moments that are priceless. And the kids are worth every penny of fun. Things are meant to be used. We don't operate a museum. We have a home. Now I wish I could say I always practice what I preach, but you know better. Jennie

steps as my food processor is really small and I get the best results this way. I have not made the time to find the history of meat loaf I just know that most of us like it, it makes a great meal and for meatloaf lovers there is nothing like a meat loaf sandwich the next day! It makes for great planned-overs. I have learned over the years of writing this column that you like recipes, well I don't have a written recipe for my loaf but I will give it a cook's try. I know traditionally the meat is often a mixture of beef, pork and veal. My meat loaf is all lean beef, but you can also use ground turkey or chicken. My basic meat loaf is one pound of lean ground beef, one cup of oatmeal processed until fine, one pureed onion, one egg, half a teaspoon of pepper, one tablespoon of horseradish, and half a cup catsup or one can of tomato sauce. Then I look in the refrigerator for any containers that have just a little left in them and add them to the meatloaf; it could be jams, jellies, sauces, salad dressings and/or cheese. This is why I often make one of a kind meatloaves that I can never make again. When you are making chili it is also a good time to visit the refrigerator and empty the containers. Mix all the ingredients together, but don't over

and I have a good set of silverware we bring out for company for things like Easter and Christmas dinners. For daily use we have a much older and more battered set of tableware we call ow "bendable buddies". We've been married almost forty years and we're still not good enough to be company in ow own home. But when we moved here we couldn't find the old stuff. We had to use the good stuff. And you know what? The world didn't fall apart. Everything was just fine. After a day or two of living in the lap of luxury I realized something. We're worth it. We're all worth it. So if you've got something you've been afraid to take out of the cupboard or the drawer because it might get damaged let me make one suggestion. Use it! You're worth it. We all are! mix. Then place in a loaf pan and bake for one hour in a 350 degree oven. Don't over bake it as you don't want it to be dry. Meat loaf can be baked in ring pans, in individual greased custard cups, or shaped and baked in a casserole pan. To make your own ring pan you can use a pie plate and place a glass or custard cup in the center and then shape the meat mixture around it. Individual meat loaves take only about 20 to 30 minutes to bake. A nice sauce or glaze I like over it, and 1 will write upfront this is not the healthiest but it sure is good, is to take equal amounts of catsup and brown sugar and heat in the microwave and then pour over the meat loaf the last 10 minutes when the baking is finishing. Also try to let the meat loaf set 10 minutes or so and you will have nice slices. Now is the time for meatloaf - enjoy! If you're interested in learning about the cheese-making process, join me from 9 a.m. noon Saturday, June 7at the Purdue Extension Elkhart County Office for a cheese-making workshop. Pre-registration is required and a participation fee does apply. For more information, contact the office at 574-533-0554.
