Math team finishes second in state competitions

On April 22, competitions were held across the state of Indiana for every school who chose to field teams in the following areas: English, Fine Arts, Science, Math, Social Studies, and Interdisciplinary. The top five to seven teams from each class qualified for the State finals. North Wood Academic Teams competed at the Area Meet at Northndge High School. After computing scores for the other 52 schools who competed in Qass 2, three NWHS teams Fine Arts, Science, and Math qualified for the State Finals on May 10, at Purdue University. The Fine Arts team scored third overall in Qass 2 and is coached by Melinda Sharp. The following students competed for the Fine Arts team: Captain Katlyn Miller, Mikayla Bedward, Nolan Mcßride, Emily Stichter, The Science team placed fourth in Qass 2 and is coached by Stephani Neff. Competing for the team were: Captain Adam Darr, Michael Gongwer, Sarah McNeill, Connor Yoder, and Dominic Yoder. The Math team, placed second overall in the State. The math team is coached by Doug Gerber and the following students competed for the Math team: Captain Adam Darr, Joshua Balasa, Connor Yoder, and Dominic Yoder. The Social Studies team placed ninth in the State. This team is coached by Trevor Shields. The following students competed for the Social Studies team: Captain Abbey McNeill, Haley Foster, Hailee Neverman, and Derek Parker. The English team, coached by Kelly Vorhis, placed sixth in the State and missed qualifying for the State finals by one question. The couple is active in Nappanee's Second Saturdays and Apple Festival events, the Retail Committee, and Board of Directors of the Nappanee Area Chamber of Commerce. EXCELLENCE IN BUSINESS AWARD —- The second "2013 Excellence In Business Award" went to Main Street Coffee House, owned by Marcus and Debra Miller. The Coffee House is known for offering some of the best tasting coffee in the area, many unique flavors and seasonal coffees, fresh baked goods, light lunches, and being owned by two people dedicated to serving not only their customers, but also their hometown of Nappanee. The Millers, who opened a second location inside the City of South Bend in 2010, have served coffee in downtown Nappanee for over 10 years. EXCELUENCE IN BUSINESS AWARD Rocket Science Ice Cream was also recognized with a "2013 Excellence in Business Award" for serving up dishes recognized locally, at the state level and nationally. Steve Helmuth opened Rocket Science Ice Cream five years ago. Since then his business has been one of only 10 featured on "Ice Cream Nation," found on Food Network. In 2012 Rocket Science Ice Cream was voted #6 in specialty ice cream as recognized by the State of Indiana. Most recently, in 2013, the business was featured in "Food" Magazine. Helmuth works hard to maintain his successful business and is equally dedicated to community involvement. Rocket Science Ice Cream is a part of Nappanee Second Saturdays, the Memorial Bike Ride; various fundraisers, supports ribbon cuttings for fellow Nappanee businesses and works to support Family Christian Development Center. Chambers join for golf outing

NAPPANEE - The Nappanee and Wakarusa Chambers of Commerce invite the community to spend the day with them on June 14 for their Joint Chamber Golf Outing. Along with the popular putting contest, there will be a longest drive, longest putt and Hole-in-One contest.
