Wakarusa play shows kids what it’s like to be ‘off the grid’

By Amy Wenger Advance Correspondent WAKARUSA The young people of our present day society don't remember ever having lived their lives without some element of electronic gadgetry becoming involved. For them, it would be difficult to fathom the possibility of a world "off the grid." So the fourth and fifth-grade students of Wakarusa Elementary will offer a hilariously chaotic interpretation of such a dilemma with their upcoming musical "A Kid's Life." The production will begin at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 24 and will take place on the auditorium stage of North Wood High School. Admission is free of charge, and guests will want to arrive early to ensure the best seating options. Parents of fifth-grade students should plan to sit nearer to the left side of the audience, while fourth-grade families might wish to seek out seats closer to the right side. Members of Wakarusa Elementary's song and dance troupe "Younger Generation" will open the production with a selection of music. The evening will be recorded by MacGowan Digital Creations, and orders can be placed for copies of the performance, with CDs priced at $lO. According to Wakarusa Elementary music teacher and show director Shawn Skaggs, 'The show starts off with the kids "Lovin' Their Kid's Life" while they use their electronics. Then suddenly, a loud noise occurs and nothing will work...they panic, and suddenly, their lives go from exciting to 'stressful and tech-free.' They say 'some massive electromagnetic attack from aliens of another galaxy has jammed their technical systems!"' The story then introduces us to a typical American family, with Mom and Dad (Alison Dutkowski and Nick Jones) planning to leave for the day. While they are away, they ask Grandma and Grandpa (Bridget Marks and Zachary Gonzalez) to watch over the children. "Grandma and Grandpa are pretty hip, and once they get there, they start to show the kids how amazing a day can be without all that
