Ongoing petition seeks to eliminate statute of limitations for sexual assault

INDIANAPOLIS A petition of over 1,000 survivors and supporters was hand-delivered to Indiana Governor Mike Pence's Indianapolis office Thursday, March 13 by Joy Evans Ryder disclosing that the petition is ongoing. Indiana has the second worst statute of limitations and the second highest rate in the nation of reported sexual assault among female victims between ninth and 12th grade. That rate is 17.3 percent compared to a national average of 10.5 percent of reported assaults. It is estimated that for every assault that is reported to authorities, another goes unreported. By the

time victims become strong, independent and safe enough to come forward the statute of limitations re-victimizes them. Survivor and victims’ advocate Keith Morris said, Tve wanted this for so long. I saw what eliminating the statute of limitations accomplished in Virginia. Today there are about 25 states that have no statute of limitations."
