About 10 years ago the movie "Bruce Almighty" presented a funny scenario when God (played by Morgan Freeman) gave some of God's power to Bruce (played by Jim Carrey). Normally I don't think Hollywood does well when it comes to representing God or issues of faith. But Bruce Almighty did a pretty good job of doing just this and I was impressed by the theological concepts that were presented. I share this because I'm pretty sure my congregation believes this has happened to me that God gave me control of winter for the 2013-2014 season. I am one who loves snow and this winter has been a snow lover's paradise. But no, this did not happen. I am not in charge of winter in northern Indiana; for if I was, I'm afraid that you snow haters out there would have enjoyed yourselves even less this winter season. enveloped me as I ran down the road. My mind was filled with sacred texts that not only comforted me, but gave me the strength I needed to get through the next several days. That is but one example of the times I have felt power come to me through the Holy Spirit acting through God's word. Now, I cannot turn my old car into a sports car as Bruce did in the movie, nor am I am able to bring every snow storm to northern Indiana. However, I can have all the power I need to get through the situations that life brings my way because of my relationship to God through Jesus the Christ. Whether it's the support of the Holy Spirit or the influence of God's Word, I know that God goes with me and that is enough. So may we all spend time reading our Bibles and allowing God's spirit to fill us with God's power.
