Most of don't eat just for nutrition; we eat for all kinds of reasons. National Nutrition Month is a nutrition education and information campaign to encourage you to eat healthy. It reinforces the importance of nutrition as a key component of our health, along with physical activity. More of the time we should focus attention on the importance of making informed food choices and developing and practicing healthy eating and physical activity habits. One key item that you need to keep in mind is that healthy eating is an investment in your health, which helps you get the most out of life. A healthy lifestyle is the key to feeling and looking great and being your best every day. Bottom line is this all begins by having a healthy eating plan. Many of your individual needs and preferences were determined when you were a child, so needless to say the eating habits you are helping to establish in your chil-

GAPS training essential for fruit, produce growers

“Good Agricultural Practices minimize contamination risks in fields, orchards and packing sheds.”

There have been several well-publicized incidents over the last few years where fruits or vegetables were contaminated by microbes, sold to the public, and people were sickened and even died. The resulting backlash has led to the development of standards to minimize the risk of microbial contamination. The federal government's Food and Drug Administration is creating these standards, called Good Agricultural Practices, to minimize contamination risks in fields, orchards and packing sheds. The rules are not complete yet, but they are being finalized. What we do know is that growers will be required to go through GAPs training where they will learn about techniques to reduce contamination. Some buyers of produce are already beginning to require their growers to go through training. At some point down the road, growers will most likely be required to certify their farm for GAPs. We do not fully know what that will involve. Purdue Extension will be offering two chances locally for growers to attend GAPS training: on Thursday, March 27 in LaGrange yCounty at the Gear Spring Produce Friday, March 2& in Elkhart County at the Wakarusa Produce Auction. Both trainings will last approximately 6 horns. The LaGrange County training will run from 2:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. The Elkhart County training will run from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Both programs will feature the same content. When you complete one of these training sessions, you will receive a certificate that

dren, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews are extremely important. Eating a wide variety of foods is also important, as it not only provides some of the pleasurable aspects of eating, it promotes optimal nutrition. Work at expanding your range of choices and exploring new tastes within and among the various food groups, especially vegetables, fruits and whole grains. you attended the training. This is not the same thing as having your farm certified. Certification of a farm will be more complicated and the exact requirements are not 100 percent known to us yet! Produce growers who have not yet participated in a GAPs training are encouraged to pick one of these programs to attend. We would like your reservation by March 21 to plan for meals. A meal will be provided at both events. The cost is S3O per farm for the first person, $lO for the second person. Make checks payable to Purdue CES Education fund. If you are attending in LaGrange, the reservation should be sent to Steve Engleking, Purdue Extension - LaGrange County, 114 W Michigan Street, Suite 10, LaGrange, IN 46761. If you are attending in Elfchah County, please send your information to Jeff Burbrink, Purdue Extension - Elkhart County, 17746 CR 34, Goshen, IN 45628. Think of it this way, you decide how much you eat and how often you eat. Healthy eating does not and should not mean feeling deprived or guilty. Learn to look at the big picture: what you eat and how much you eat over the course of several days, not just one day or one meal. If you are really serious about changing your eating habits you might want to try doing a food journal. A food journal is simply where you write down everything you eat. Adults and children need to match their food choices to their lifestyle and individual requirements, choosing enough to achieve and maintain a healthy weight. Besides eating a variety of safe foods in moderation you need to develop a personal fitness plan that fits your lifestyle. We have known for some time the importance of physical activity. Physical activity is more important that most people realize. We need to be physically active so that our bodies

What do you want from your community newspaper? What makes you want to read the Pilot News, the Bremen Enquirer, Advance News, Culver Citizen, Bourbon News-Mirror or the The Leader? I want to know. As I approach my one-year anniversary with the Pilot News Group, I have been looking back and trying to look ahead to see what dianges we can make in what we do, how we do it and why we do it. There is an abundance of local news in the newspaper now; interesting feature stories and even some local columnists. We've added a health page on Tuesdays and an Arts & Entertainment page on Fridays in the Pilot News, which is still Marshall County's daily newspaper. The only problem we have is that there is sometimes more good information than we can fit on the designated page. When you publish a newspaper, having too much information is a good problem to have. Sure, the Pilot News and all newspapers struggle with what sometimes seems easy fixes, such as editorial mistakes like misspelled names, but we have made progress. Unless you've worked under tight, looming and immediate deadlines, it may be hard to understand how these can occur, but mistakes happen and we hate it when we realize that a typo .has slipped, by. But aside from these kind of errors, I want to know what we need to do to better represent the community. What kind of columns would you like to see? Should we recruit local political columnists, sports fans and others from the community to enlighten and entertain?

will make the best use of the nutrients we get from the foods we eat So you might begin a plan to walk outside since warm weather is just around the comer. The key to increasing your physical activity is to find a variety of activities you enjoy and then creating a plan so you do it. You don't need to have expensive equipment or a complicated fitness program. The bottom line is you just need to move more every day, eat healthy and drink your water. What about stories on local businesses, manufacturers and organizations? There are so many good stories out there, and people who are doing what they can to help the economy and the community. Perhaps we need to tell these stories more often. What do you think? Criticism can be a powerful tool. As a beginning poet, I welcomed the constructive criticism of my peers. Their insight helped me identify the areas that were a struggle for me as well as the areas in which I excelled. Criticism and helpful suggestions can make something good even better. It also helps to have shortcomings pointed out. It helps set up a to-do list of improvements and everyone benefits when that happens. If you don’t know something isn’t working, you can't fix it. And while asking for this kind of input finot the public, can be a little scary, I am that all suggestions will only lead to a twtter product. It's like asking your significant other their opinion on what you are wearing is there any safe answer? I'm game. Are you?
