Panthers tall to Bishop Dwenger in regional semis
By Steve Sutler Advance News Correspondent HARTFORD CITY - Despite a heroic third-quarter rally, the North Wood Panther boys' basketball team dug themselves a first-half hole that was just too big to climb out of and fell to Ft. Wayne Bishop Dwenger 50-44 in the opening game of the Qass 3A regional basketball tournament at Blackford High School. The disappointing loss ended a magical season for the Panthers, who finished with a record of 21-3, the most victories in school history. In addition, the Panthers had to say goodbye to five standout seniors (Tanner Farmwald, Kyle McCoy, Will Stueve, Jonathan Wilkinson, and Will Stueve) who were the first class in the history of file school to be a part of two sectional championship boys' basketball team.s (2012 and 2014) and more importantly, were outstanding representatives of their school and their community. In front of a huge contingent of vocal North Wood fans, the Panthers mysteriously came out flat, watching Dwenger bolt to an 8-0 lead in the first four minutes. After a quick timeout, Zurcher stopped the bleeding briefly with five quick points, but the Saints ran off seven more and a rebound basket by Dwenger's David Peters made it 17-9 Saints after one period. The quicker Dwenger post men continued to make life difficult for North Wood in the second period, scoring almost at will in the paint while the Panthers could not find the mark on the offensive end. "It took us awhile to adjust to their style of play", said Wolfe. "They made it very tough for us to score in the post". By the time the quarter ended, the Saints had doubled up the Panthers, taking a 32-16 lead to the locker room and leaving many North Wood fans shaking their heads in bewilderment. Whatever Wolfe said to his charges at halftime must have been spectacular, as the Panthers came out like their collective hair

was on fire, scoring the first seven points of the quarter and harassing the Saints into turnovers or bad shots. Wilkinson and sophomore Braxton Linville led the way for North Wood, pouring in six points each in the quarter as North Wood outscored Dwenger 16-4 (holding the Saints without a field goal), and cut the lead to four at 36-32 going to the final stanza. With the Panther faithful making a terrific racket, Linville nailed a three at the fourminute marie to make it 40-37 Dwenger, but Saint guard Marcus Stepp answered with back-to-back buckets to push the advantage back to seven at 44-37. Sadly, it was as dose as the Panthers would get until the final seconds, as North Wood committed several ugly turnovers and, forced to foul, watched Dwenger sink multiple free throws to expand their lead to as many as 10 points. Zurcner nailed a three with five seconds left for the final 50-44 margin, but it was too little, too late as the Saints moved on to the final to face Munrie Central, an upset winner over Norwell in the second contest. "It's really disappointing", said Zurcher, who finished with nis second straight dou-ble-double, scoring a game-high 16 points and pulling down 12 rebounds. "My teammates are like my brothers and I really appredate the effort they gave. We just got started too late". Zurcher will move on to continue his career at the University of Indianapolis in the fall. Wilkinson, bound for Hillsdale College, added 13 points and made four steals in his high school finale, while Linville had 9 points and will be the leading returning scorer for North Wood in 2014-2015. Jeff Mugg paced Dwenger with 15 points, followed by nine each from Stepp and Grady Eifert and eight from Kyle Hartman. FT. WAYNE BISHOP DWENGER 50, NORTHWOOD 44 AT BLACKFORD H.S., HARTFORD CITY
