Church using ancient bible for Lenten studies

Vital Ministry Journey is a bible studv program created by the Church of the Brethren's Congregational Life Ministries team. It is geared at encouraging the reader to make their own assumptions about what the Bible says, rather than simply explaining the purpose behind passages to diem. "This is more of a spirit-guided thing," Byrl Shaver, pastor at the Nappanee Church of the Brethren,

explained. "What we’re trying to do is get people to think for themselves. Instead of having one person say This is what God says,’ you're reflecting in on it" Nine small groups of three to five people will meet once per week for a bible study which will touch on a single passage of the Bible, asking what the reader what word or phrase stands out to them, what the text invites the reader to do and a single person question related to the text. The group will then participate in prayer, write about the passage in the attached journal and reflect, with the group if wanted, on what the passage means to them. "People hear God in different ways

is a great fit for us, offering an attractive space to showcase the work of our artists and a convenient place for our guests to shop and learn," said coordinator, Jessica Flores. "With the addition of Coppes vendors and amenities, guests will find it easy to spend the entire day at the event on Saturday or enjoy an evening out with friends on Friday." Several free workshops will be offered, including jewelry-making, illustration, watercolor and pastel painting, charcoal drawing, balloon twisting and more. Unlike previous years, all classes will be walk-in only: no pre-registration will be taken, so plan to arrive early, and secure a spot. A full workshop schedule is available at www. nappaneelibrary.org. Open hours for the public are Friday, from 7-9 p.m. and Saturday, 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. Admission and parking are free. For a minimum pledge of $25 to either purchase artwork during the show or give as a gift in support of the program, guests

and it's reflected in these groups," Shaver explained. "Basically, what we're doing is letting the scripture speak for itself." The simplistic approach to bible study is actually an ancient study program called lectio divinia," latin for "divine reading" and was practiced as early at 50 AD before it fell out of popularity during the Dark Ages. This is the first year the approach is being used by the Church of the Brethren and maybe churches around the country are trying the program out this Lenten season. Although the first bible study sessions have already taken place this week, interested individuals may
