Panthers bounce back with two more wins

NAPPANEE/GOSHEN - Slowing no effects from dropping their first game of the season against NLC rival Northndge on January 17th, the North Wood Panthers boys' basketball team bounced back just four days later by demolishing Lakeland 89-55, then gutted out a 53-48 Friday night overtime road win at Northern Lakes Conference (NLC) rival Goshen to improve to 11-1 on the year. RMMMB9, LakaMSß In a game in which the turning point was the national anthem, the Panthers dominated the visiting Lakers by scoring a season-high 89 points, including 10 threepointers. North Wood also dished out 27 assists on their 34 baskets, also their best mark of the year. The Panthers scored the first 16 points of the game before a bucket by Lakeland's Chandler Mynhier got the visitors on the board and finished the quarter 9 of 14 from the field (including 4 of 5 from three-point range) and 8 of 9 from the ffee-throw line, putting up 30 points in a tremendous offensive display. Jonathan Wilkinson led the way in the period for North Wood with 10 points, but right behind was sophomore Braxton Linville with eight points and Zach Zurcher and Will Stueve with five apiece. Although Lakeland finally began to show some life in tire second quarter, helped by some sloppy play from North Wood that raised the ire of Panther mentor Aaron Wolfe, the Panthers continued to dominate in the paint. Zurcher poured in 8 more points and Stueve 6 as North Wood expanded the lead to 52-27 at tne half. Mynhier and Eric Herber had six points each for Lakeland to keep the faint Laker hopes alive. Lakeland was paced by 14 points from Mynhier and 10 from Marco Olivares. nKJrUIvvUUII Do, Goman 48 r OT Following the easy win over Lakeland, the Panthers faced an entirely different challenge in the tall and athletic Goshen Redskins, the first team all season who matched up evenly with North Wood in size, and it took an extra four minutes for the good guys to come away with the victory. Goshen finally stopped the rally with yet another trey by Kline, his fourth of the half, but Wilkinson then got hot and led the Panthers on another run to narrow the Goshen lead to 28-26 at the half. After the half, North Wood finally tied the game at 32 on a basket by Stueve before both teams went into the freezer, trading misses for the next 444 minutes. Zurcher broke the ice by hitting 1 of 2 free throws at the 1:25 mark, giving North Wood its first lead since 2-0, but Haynes converted a four-point play at the buzzer to boost the hosts back to a 38-33 lead with eight minutes remaining. The Panthers then dialed up a full-court, man-to-man press, forcing several Goshlen turnovers, but could not buy a bucket despite getting multiple point-blank Safari* the paint. FRESHMAN BOYS FALL BY TWO North Wood's freshman boys basketball team lost a 37-35 heartbreaker to Tippecanoe Valley recently. Drew Minnich led North Wood with 12 points, five rebounds and three assists. Travis Stephenson scored nine, and Luke Zurcher scored eight, and the duo passed out four and three assists, respectively. The freshman boys' record slipped to 6-4 with the loss.
