Enjoying the weather God gave us

in the beginning, when God created planet Earth, God declared that all was good. That indudes weather and yes, that indudes winter. I am one who enjoys each season as it moves into our area and is ready to say goodbye as it leaves. I realize that many, perhaps even most, of those reading this column will disagree with me, but I think the snowstorm of Jan. and Jan. 6 was a gift from God. It was wonderful to see that despite all our technological advances, all our planning all our ways of dealing with life, that God is still in charge. Being forced to stay at home on Monday was truly a blessing. I must admit that Monday and Tuesday were cold for even this die hard winter runner; I dedded to keep the running shoes in the doset. But I did get outside to play a little. I truly enjoy snow. When I say this folks

We long to see our lives filled more and more with love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-con troll. At times we question why we don't see more of these things in our lives. But what we are actually doing in order to grow? We have to be intentional. In 2014, what are you going to do to grow closer to God? Having said all that, true growth and true transformation are only accomplished through God working in us. In fact, what we often refer to as spiritual disciplines or exercises (prayer, studying the Bible, etc.) are effective not because they make us grow but because they help us allow God to do the real work of changing us. What is more, God longs to do this work in us. God wants us to experience God's love ever more fully. God longs for us to have abundant life. God desires to fill us with all good things. In Psalm 81 we read these marvelous words: "For it was I, the LORD your God, who rescued you from the land of Egypt. Open your mouth wide, and I will fill it with good things. "But no, my people wouldn't listen. Israel did not want me around. So I let them follow their own stubborn desires, living according to their own ideas. Oh, that my people would listen to me! Oh, that Israel would follow me, walk-

assume I have a snowmobile or that I ski. I do neither. I just like snow. I like to use the snow blower and I don't mind using a shovel. I love to run in it (so Sunday was a blast), walk in it, and sometimes just lay in it while it falls on my face. By now many of you are making plans to

ing in my paths! "...I would feed you with the finest wheat. I would satisfy you with wild honey from the rock." (Psalm 81:10-13,16) It is amazing to think that God is just waiting to fill us with good things. God is just waiting for us to open our mouths, to allow God to give us what we truly need. One of the most important things we can do in 2014 is to be intentional about letting God give us good things. As we set our goals for 2014, and hopefully some of those goals have to do with growing doser to God, pause and consider the words of Henri Nouwen in "The Return of the Prodigal Son: "For most of my life I have struggled to find God, to know God, to love God.. .Now I wonder whether I have suffidently realized that during all this time God has been trying to find me, to know me, and to love me. The question is not, 'How am I to find God?' but 'How am I to let myself be found by Him?' The question is not 'How am I to know God' but 'How am I to let myself be known by God?' And, finally, the question is not 'How am I to love God?' but 'How am I to let myself be loved by God?' God is looking into the distance for me, trying to find me, and longing to bring me home.

have me dear your lane and sidewalk for the next snow storm. Or perhaps I should make my address Marquette, Michigan or Buffalo, New York (actually I was offered a job in Buffalo, but my wife assured me that I would be making that relocation solo, so the job was turned down). A friend on Facebook did write that they supposed the world needed folks like me, tnose who could appreciate winter. To me, that's what makes the world God created as such a wonderful place, a place where folks can disagree when it comes to winter love. I'm confident that there's probably more than winter where we would not see eye to eye. But I think that one thing that trumps all is the love and grace of our lord Jesus Christ. This grace reaches out to snow birds and snow lovers alike. It reaches out to each one who asks for it.

In my opinion, we don't truly appredat all that God does for us. I doubt if many c us ever pause to think about our planet' rotation or the trajectory we take arourx the sun. We know that it happens but that' about it But it is those filings that help t make life possible on Earth and these filing help to generate our weather. So one coul< say that without weather we would nc haYe life. Thus my comment above abou being thankful for the snowstorm becaus all weather is a gift from God. Maybe all of us could challenge out selves to be more thankful for all tha God does for us. Perhaps when we ca see the hand of God in the weather (eve the snow) we will rejoice. Who knows Maybe you will join me in playing durin. our next snowstorm.
