By Jeremy Mast CORRESONDENT Balanced scoring and consistency throughout the game propelled the Black Swish to a 72-31 victory over Northern Lakes Conference (NLC) foe Wawasee last Saturday night in the Pit. Scoring 19, 17, 19, and 17 points in each quarter respectively, is just what head coach Steve Neff is looking for from his offense. Junior Jordyn Frantz got things going scoring five of the first 10 North Wood points. ft & Spurt that gave the Lady Panthers a quick 10-5 lead. Not wanting to go away and after a timeout Wawasee hit a shot to cut into the lead. There was no answer for senior Morgan Olson. She scored 14 of her game high 20 points in the first quarter. Olson had her post game going, hit shots from the elbow, and had her normal soft touch from the free through line. The Lady Panthers didn't slow down starting the second quarter. Jumping into a man-to-man defense held the Lady Warrior shooters to three points.

This didn't bother the offense either as North Wood took a 36-15 lead into halftime. Olson and Frantz continued their offensive dominance combining for 27 points in the first half. The third quarter started out a little sloppy for the Black Swish, and Neff call a timeout just two minutes into the second half. Whatever was said during, the timeout worked, as the ladies responded with another great quarter. Senor Taylor Fielstra scored 10 points during the quarter, including two baskets from long range. The Lady Wirriors decided % pay mote attentipir“dowij low, which lead to Fielstra being free on the outside. North Wood ended the third period leading 55-20. The final stanza saw much of the same from North Wood. Aggressive on the offensive end and tena'cious on the defensive end, the Lady Panthers finished off Wawasee. This was one of the best all around games for the Lady Panthers this year. The tough non-conference schedule is starting to pay off. Panthers get ugly win at Wawasee, 52-44
By Steve Sittler Correspondent NORTH WEBSTER hustle, determination, and heart were all it took to win basketball games, the Wawasee Warriors might have come away with an upset win last Friday night. Fortunately for the North Wood Panther boys' basketball team, height and talent eventually prevailed over the gritty Warriors, as the Panthers came away with a 52-44 Northern Lakes Conference (NLC) win that improved their record to 8-0 (2-0 NLC). muruinuuu o&f WnnwniiMi 41 The game began on a solid note for North Wood, as the Panthers held Wawasee without a field goal in the first period and led 13-5 at the first stop. Senior Zach Zurcher scored the first nine points for North Wood before taking a seat after picking up his second foul, while Alex Clark and Stori Bright combined to make 5 of 6 charity tosses to keep the Warriors alive. In the second quarter, Wawasee finally got their first basket on a layup by Clark one minute into the period, then fell into a 2-3 zone on the defensive end that frustrated the Panther attack. Despite getting into the one-and-one at the 6:45 mark and the double bonus at 5:09, North Wood could not buy a basket or a free throw, finishing the half a miserable 9 of 26 from the field (including 1 of 12 from three-point ran&e) 4hd ‘'art even more dismal 4* of 12 from the free throw line. Nevertheless, the visitors still clung to a 23-18 advantage with Clark doing most of the damage for the host
Ostrowski saved best for last
By James Costello Sports Editor NAPPANEE ■ North Wood's Val Ostrowski saved her best for last. The Lady Panthers senior forward was recently given the school's first AP AllState nomination following a stellar final season with the team in which she singlehandedly rewrote the record books with six programbests. Before the season even began, Ostrowski had an inkling it was going to be a special year. "Before my senior season, I knew I was going to be playing my best soccer that I've ever played," Ostrowksi said. "I was kind of preparing for college too as I played so I think that motivated me a lot better." Ostrowski set records in single-season scoring (31), career scoring (81) and sin-gle-game saving with five goals earned in a game versus South Bend Trinity on Sept. 3. Along with those goals saved she also set season, career and game records for total points calculated by combining total goals scored with assists while leading die program to a best-ever 13-3-2 finish. She was given All-District and All-State honors for her trouble, and she's become North Wood's first future DI soccer player now that she's verbally committed to play with lUPUI beginning next fall. It's the culmination of a lifelong goal. "I started playing soccer when I was (out, and I just fell in love with five game," she said. "I knew from that young age that that was my goal to play soccer in college, mid I just grew up imagining all the schools I wanted to play at lUPUI never came to my mind, but bv mv seniori vear when I
Warriors with eight secondquarter points. The third quarter was once again excellent defensively for the Panthers, as they allowed just six points, four of diem by junior Gage Reinhard. Unfortunately, North Wood managed just nine points of their own, with most of the firepower coming from Jonathan Wilkinson who shook off a rough first half (1 of 8 from the field) to score seven points on 3 of 4 shooting to boost the Panthers to a 32-24 lead with eight minutes remaining. With Zurcher, Wilkinson, and Will Stueve all in foul trouble in the final quarter, Wawasee tried to attack the basket in hopes of sending one or more of the North Wood big men to the pine with five fouls. The key play in the game came after Clark hit a wild driving layup at the 4:48 mark to make it 37-29 Panthers but then collapsed on the court with leg cramps, forcing his exit from the game. On the ensuing inbounds play, Zurcher hit a streaking Wilkinson up the left sideline and the senior swingman then fed the trailing Stueve who threw down a monster dunk, turning the momentum back to North Wood. Although Clark returned after less than one minute of clock time and the Warriors hit two threes, their only ones of the night, it was not enough as Zurcher poured in 12 fourth-quarter points on a perfect 4 of 4 from both the field and the charity stripe to seal up the critical road victory. Zurcher had a gamehigh 25 < rl North Wood and also pulled down 7 rebounds, while Wilkinson added 14 points, 6 boards, 4 assists and 2 steals. Wawasee was led by the relentless Clark with 17

met with the team and the coaches, I knew it was a perfect fit" Ostrowski's senior season was made even more remarkable considering the North Wood striker wasn't sure dic'd even be able to play soccer again. She suffered a bone fracture in her foot at the tail end of a promising freshman season. Late* a bone lesion in her left knee required two surgeries. Finally at full strength last fall, Ostrowski was able to fulfill all her
points and Reinhard contributed 13 in the loss. North Wood (8-0,2-0 NLC) travels to New Prairie on January 14th for a nonconference battle with the always-tough Cougars, then returns to The Pit on Friday, January 17th far a huge NLC tilt against the 9-1 Northridge Raiders in a game that could go a long way in deciding the NLC title race. JV Update The North Wood JV team shook off a horrid first half, in which they put up a sea-son-low 10 points, to outscore Wawasee 32-9 in the second half and come away with a 42-29 win. The third quarter was the difference as Dakyrion Fox and Cam Simpson scored 7 points each, powering the Panthers from 10 points down to eight ahead in a 21-3 blistering of the host Warriors in the critical six minutes. Simpson and freshman guard Vincent Miranda each had 10 points to lead North Wood, while Fox added nine and sophomore guards Chad Sellers and David Eshelman five apiece for the winners. The JV squad is now 7-1 on the year, 1- in the NLC. • NORTHWOOD 52, WAWASEE 44 At North Webster North Wood 13 23 32 52 Wawasee 5 18 24 44 NORTHWOOD (52): Braxton Linville 0 04) 0, Zach Zurcher 10 4-5 25, Vincent Miranda 0 04) 0, Tanner Farmwald 10-12, Kyle McCoy 2 1-2 5, Dakyrion Fox 0 1-2 1, Jonathan Wilkinson 5 3-614, Travis Bear 00-0 0, Cam Simpson 0 0-0 0, Will Stueve 2 1-4 5 TOTALS 20 10-20 52 WAWASEE (44): Aaron Voirol 0 2- 4, Jeffrey Moore 0 0-0 0, Gage Reinhard 3 5-8 13, Jake Hutchinson 1 0-0 3, Chase Myers 1 l-l 3, David r -'mm O 04) o?'Sa#rt Clark 0 00 0, Alex Clark 5 7-8 17, Stori Bright 1 i-3-7 5.’ Elijah Soflna 1 04) 2, Kody Carpenter 0 00 0, Chase Rookstool 0 OO 0 TOTALS 12 18-28 44 3- Goals: North Wood 2 (Zurcher, Wilkinson); Wawasee 2 (Reinhard, Hutchinson)
