Black Swish struggle in opener with Mishawaka
By Jeremy Mast Correspondent NAPPANEE The North Wood Black Swish opened up the 2013-2014 season Nov. 12, facing a tough Mishawaka team that eventually defeated North Wood 41-31. "They (Mishawaka) are a very good team," North Wood head coach Steve Neff said after the game. "We play teams like this to prepare us for sectionals." This definitely looked like a first game for both teams. They both were sloppy in their play, and the shots were off. Senior guard Taylor Fielstra found the touch at the end of the first quarter, scoring five points to give North Wood a 10-4. The Lady Cavemen, as any good team does, responded with four quick points to open the second quarter. 1 It was struggle for both teams the rest of the half as the first game jitters continued. The Black Swish led at the half 14-13. Mishawaka played a slow tempo, very methodical offensive game. Controlling the clock and making the Lady Panthers play defense for extended periods really wore on North Wood. Defensively, the Lady Cavemen ran a fullcourt zone trap that slowed down the Lady Panthers. Mishawaka's pace during the game never confused North Wood, but it did frustrate them. Unforced turnovers, forced shots, and not taking some open looks are very uncharacteristic of the Black Swish. The Lady Cavemen take a 17-14 lead to open the third quarter, but junior guard Jordyn Frantz hit a big 3-pointer to tie the game. The game became more physical at the end of the quarter, and the game is tied at 21. A big missed call just

in a lot of size and a lot of very smart, high IQ players. We're looking for hardnosed, tough, blue-collar players. There is a toughness about this area, and I think those type of kids will fit in here. I think the fans will relate to those types of players. You can win a lot of games with them."

into the fourth quarter gave Mishawaka the opening they needed. After a heated tussle for a loose ball, the ball bounced off the foot of a Lady Caveman. With bodies all over the floor the referees didn't see the kick and gave the ball back to Mishawaka. They capitalized and scored the next seven points to take a 30-23 lead. That was all that was needed as 1 Mishawaka hit 8 out of 9 free throws down the stretch to finish off the Black Swish. , Senior forward Morgan
