By James Costello Pilot News Group Sports Editor WARSAW On Monday, Plymouth's Rockies earned a reprisal over an NLC foe. At Wednesday's Warsaw Sectional semifinal, they backed up a win. Cesar Aguilar notched two goals for Plymouth, and the Rockies defense combined for the blank sheet in a 2-0 win over conferencerival North Wood. Plymouth advanced to get another crack at host Warsaw at the tournament championship Saturday following the Tigers' come-from-behind 4-3 win over Culver Military Academy earlier Wednesday evening. Plymouth ultimately lost the final, 7-0 "We beat North Wood the first time, and it's hard to be able to beat a team twice in a row," said Plymouth boys soccer coach Josh Martin. "My hat's off to them because they played a terrific game they defended better, they put a ton more pressure on our net than they did in the first game. They brought a real A game against us tonight. Thankfully, we rose to the challenge, too." Aguilar scored both Plymouth goals after notch-

throwing two and three players at her intermittently in the two teams' second meeting, she barely got a whiff at a goal at Thursday. "We didn't have as much firepower this time," said DeWitt. "The last game their keeper took out Allie Wright and broke her collarbone, so there went our second leading scorer. We lost Kaydon Fosler to a code of conduct violation, so she was out and she played most every minute in the middle, and of course Kirstin Riise has been out and she was our center defender. When you gut die middle of your team like that, it makes it difficult to be able to play the way that you would want to." The two teams were locked in a scoreless tie through nearly the full first half Thursday, but after several near-misses and big saves by beleaguered Rockies sophomore goalie Katie Berg, the Panthers finally broke through when Kaitlyn Heckaman won a 50-50 ball off a hopper just outside of die Plymouth box and got in behind the defense for a near-post score with just five seconds remaining in die first half. Trailing by a goal in the second half, Plymouth pushed up after the break. But with the stout North Wood defense offering few offensive opportunities, the Panthers countered their way to three more secondhalf scores and the win. "We had to change a little bit of our strategy and go a littie more offensively, and
ing another two with an assist in the Rockies' 3-1 quarterfinal win over Wawasee Monday night. He put Plymouth on the scoreboard with a penalty kick in the 22nd minute after Blake Milliser was fouled in the North Wood box, and he gave his team some insurance in the 65th minute when he back-kicked a Gonzalo Figueroa pass into the corner of the North Wood net in a highlight reel-worthy play that all but put Plymouth out of reach. The game was nip-tuck most of the way with Plymouth registering just two more shots on goal than the Panthers. But it was those two shots that wound up making the difference. After Aguiliar's first-half goal in the two teams' first meeting a week ago, Dennyz Barahona tied it up in the 42nd minute before Clay Marshall's game-winner on an Aguilar assist in the 62nd minute, and Dennyz and Brandon Barahona both looked dangerous again Wednesday night. Plymouth advanced to play defending semistate champion Warsaw in the title game Saturday. The two teams were locked in a scoreless stalemate at halftime in their first meeting back on Aug. 29 which Warsaw eventually won 3-0 and
not be as worried you know if you can't score a goal, you can't win," DeWitt explained. "That was what we were trying to do in the second half, and that's why (Val Ostrowski) got loose and was able to score a couple times." North Wood striker Ostrowski scored her team's insurance goal a littie over six minutes into the second period with a hard drive into the far upper 90 on a 1 v 1 situation. The North Wood all-time leading scorer who also tied her program's record for single-game scores with five earlier this season scored again from in close with 22:22 remaining in the game to give the Panthers plenty of breathing room. "I'm impressed with her overall body of Work," said Ummel of Ostrowski. "She set the career scoring record this year for our school She's at maybe 81 now after Tonight. She's at 34 in the season, which is second in the state right now. She's been phenomenal all year; she's been dangerous every time she's touched the ball. Plymouth did an excellent job of trying to keep one, two, three bodies around her aS much as possible, but she fought through that and found an opening, and it was nice to see her find the back of the net a couple times." Kiersten Lehman got free and dribbled one in the far comer of the Plymouth net in the 61st minute to sink the Rockies' hopes of a come-

back with the home team's shots coming few and far between. Madilyn Eberle made three saves in goal for North Wood in the blank sheet, while Berg notched nine saves in a gutsy performance battling through a hip injury in the net for Plymouth. j The Rockies close out the season at 10-8 and will bid goodbye to just two seniors, but they're two key seniors in Hersick and defender Elizabeth Huerta. "I've been here three years with Elizabeth Huerta and Courtney Hersick. They've been there through the good times and the bad times," said DeWitt. "You hate to lose good, quality people. Courtney is just an outstanding player and an outstanding individual. Elizabeth plays with everything she's got whenever she's in there, and you can't ask for more than that. Courtney is just a leader in everything that she does. She's always looking out for all the girls and taking care of the team, and that's one thing that I'll miss more than anything. "I think we'll start working tomorrow on next season," added the Lady Rockies boss. North Wood's squad sets a school record in wins with 13 with Thursday's victory. The team will take on Warsaw for title championship Saturday at 7 p.m. at Kindt Field. "I like file way we played, I like what I saw from the team," said Ummel. "I like

The rest of the game was a defensive struggle, with North Wood punting once and turning the ball over on yet another interception, and Warsaw giving up the pigskin twice on downs, the last with just 1:05 left in the game, too late for a Panther rally. North Wood finished with just 106 yards on the ground, led by 54 from Kirkwood and 35 from Edwards. Through the air, Kirkwood completed 10 of 22 passes for 150 yards and a TD. Bear led the Panther receiving corps with four catches for 66 yards including a score. The Black Crunch defense was paced by nine tackles from linebacker Derek Weldy and eight each from Scott Kern and Jeremiah Hilty, with Hilty's tally including a sack. Warsaw piled up a whopping 286 yards c>n the ground, most of it by McClone who carried 29 times for his 195 yards and two TDs. Head was an efficient 5 of 7 through the air for 70 yards and two scores. The Tiger defense was led by Gabe Fumivall with seven tackles and Schaefer with six stops. North Wood (4-4, 2-4 NLC) returns home for the final regular-reason contest on October 18th against Plymouth, and will honor the 13 Panthers seniors in a pre-game ceremony.
