Photo by Dale Tobias Nappanee Mayor Larry Thompson wishes North Wood golfers Heidi Morganthlaer, Linnzie Ridiner and Summer Stillson luck before the Lady Panthers' first round at the IHSAA State Finals in Franklin last Friday. Lady Panthers seniors cap off careers in style at state By James Costello Pilot News Group Sports Editor NAPPANEE Coaches often say a team is only as good as its seniors. The reason for this is two-fold. For one thing, seniors are often the most experienced athletes on a roster, and are therefore leaders on the playing field, court or course. And secondly, they usually play a key role in guiding younger players to meet their coaches' and programs' expectations. North Wood's girls golf team finished up its season with a first-ever trip to the IHSAA State Finals at the Legends in Franklin last weekend, where the team placed 15th with a 736 score over two rounds. A big part of the reason for the Lady Panthers' big finish was its seniors, Heidi Morganthaler and Kayla Stankovich, says head coach Adam Yoder. "These two seniors are a perfect pair because of what they given to the program in their own way," said the North Wood golf coach via email. "Kayla Stankovich had never even played golf when she came to us as a freshman. Her freshman year, she was number 13 on a team of 13 girls. But each year she got a little better and a little better and over the last two years, she's been a fixture in our varsity linew*. parred tlw hardest hole on the Middle 9 at trie Legends on Friday in her final round. She's been great leader for our younger girls, and her example is one that should be an inspiration to future players who want to start playing golf when they get to high school. She proved it can be done. "Heidi, on the other hand, has been the program's backbone the last couple of years. Her level of consistency, her leadership abilities (both vocally and by example) and her drive to be as good as she can have all been huge reasons why we've done what we've done over the past few years." Morganthaler put in her team's top finish one final time See Style, Page A 7

Troutman pass at the Charger 24-yard line. With 2:16 left in the half, it took North Wood just four plays to reach the end zone, with Cleveland taking it the last six yards for the score. The PAT was no good, but North Wood took a 20-8 lead to the locker room. Following the halftime break, the Panthers forced a Charger punt on the opening series, then put together a 10-play drive that culminated with a 28-yard field goal by Miller to push the North Wood lead to 23-8. The next Memorial drive also ended badly for the hosts when Panther safety Dominic Miranda picked off a Troutman pass and returned it 10 yards to the North Wood 30. The Panthers needed just eight plays to find the end zone again, driving 70 yards, all of it on the legs of Cleveland and Kirkwood, until Cleveland bolted in from the three to make it 30-8 just a minute and a half into the fourth quarter.
