To The Apple Festival Committee: Our sincere thanks to the 2013 Nappanee Apple Festival Committee for selecting us to be the Grand Marshals. We saw firsthand how much work everyone puts forth to make this event a huge success. We were honored and felt so blessed to be a part of this huge event. From the reception on Monday night to the parade, we had a fantastic time and was so proud to be from Nappanee! Lora Beachy, Director, along with each and every volunteer worked endless hours to make this festival a success. Our mayor was very involved; we saw him pitch in and help to empty trash barrels. So many people asked us "how does a small town like Nappanee host such a large and fantastic festival?" We simply told them the people in Nappanee have big hearts and love being a part of this wonderful event. We never had a "Bucket List" and won't need one now. This festival far exceeded anything we could ever imagine. Thank you, Nappanee. Dean and Sally Guard Grand Marshals 2013 Nappanee Apple Festival

RUNNING WITH v \* HONOR £
Bill Mitschelen brought a unique and touching twist to the 2013 Nappanee Apple Festival 5K Race. His wife, Keri Mitschelen, is an avid runner who signed up to take part in the race before injuring a foot which left her unable to participate. Mitschelen ran the race in his wife's place to honor her. Mitschelen's efforts also paid tribute to fellow members of the Nappanee Volunteer Fire Department when he chose to run the 5K suited up in full firefighter's gear. By the end of the trail his placement was of no interest to anyone witnessing his honorable run but it earned him great respect throughout the community.

Tribute to Rod Bradway
Editor's Note: The following is the text of the remarks nude by Indiana Governor Mike Pence at Thursday's funeral for slain Indianapolic police officer and former Nappanee resident Rod Bradway. INDIANAPOLIS, IND. Jamie, Jonathan, Sierra, Mr. and Mrs. Bradway, Chip and members of the family, Mayor Ballard, Chief Hite, Mayor Thompson, members of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, other public safety officials from all across our state and nation, honored guests, neighbors and friends... Words fail when heroes fall. In times like these, words can never give proper voice to our sorrow, our gratitude, our respect. And still we must try. It is said, "There is a time for every purpose under heaven, a time to laugh and a time to mourn." On behalf of all the people of Indiana, it is my solemn duty to say that this is a time for all of Indiana to mourn—to mourn the passing of a husband, a father, a hero to us all— Officer Rod Bradway. Today is a day of grief and sadness. It is also a day of gratitude and respect. This city, this state owe a debt of honor to Officer Rod Bradway and his family that we will never fully repay. He was one of us and he was the best
Time for domestic violence awareness
By Laura Berry During a recent 1.2 month period, 58 people died by an act of domestic violence in Indiana. And just a few weeks ago an abuser in Indianapolis shot and killed a police officer whose brave actions saved the life of the abuser's girlfriend and her 10-month old child. Throughout Indiana we hear stories of abuse too often. Over and over the result is women and children who need shelter, health care, food, clothes and legal assistance. Unfortunately the need always outweighs the available resources. Shelters took in 11,719 victims, but struggled to find other options for another 3,837 people when the shelters were full. And die abuse ■sWritinues. w We know that about power and control It is physical, sexual, emotional, economic and psychological. It is behavior that frightens, intimidates, terrorizes, manipulates or wounds someone. We know we need to continue the critical work to help women in crisis and we will continue to help them
Breast Cancer plate makes a difference
INDIANAPOLIS Record sales continue for the Indiana breast cancer license plate. More than 19,000 plates were sold in 2012. Steady sales indicate plate sales should top 20,000 for 2013. In 2012, the plate helped detect more cancers than ever before, giving a better chance at recovery for dozens of Hoosier women and peace of mind to thousands more. The $25 tax-deductible donation for each plate is pooled by the Indiana Breast Cancer Awareness Trust

of us, and we rightly honor him as such. But, we also gather to pay a debt of respect for the courage of a hero—the courage of Officer Rod Brad way. These days, we often hear people speak of finding courage in what people say. But courage is not found in words. It is found in deeds. Not in what we say, but in moments of trial courage is revealed in what we do. A man of few words, Officer Rod Bradway showed his courage in what he did. In the finest tradition of his calling, without regard for his personal safety, Officer Rod Bradway risked his life to save another. To answer a cry for help, without hesitation, he acted, he rescued and he showed "no greater love." For, "No greater love has a man than this, that he should lay down his life for his friends." Like the thousands of uniformed officers who gather with us today, his duty was to protect and serve. Our duty is to remember and honor and pray for this courageous man and the family he leaves behind. And this we will do. To those who had in Officer Bradway a husband, a father, a son, a brother, a comrade and a friend, we cannot ease your pain. We can only stand with you and pray that the Lord Himself might be a
one by one. But we believe it's time to get to the root of the problem. Gloria Steinem said it best: "We are still standing on the bank of the river, rescuing people who are drowning. We have not gone to the head of the river to help them from falling in. That is the 21st century task." The root of the problem is this: • We believe it's acceptable for men to be dominant and solely in control of a relationship. • We promote women as objects. • Violence is tolerated and victims are blamed for it. • Value is placed on claiming and maintaining control over others. • We believe our family's privacy is so sacrosanct thJlrwe eHWturagesecrtfty and silefW^ind Ag» those wljft ~ intervening. Gov. Mike Pence special comfort to each of you in your time of bereavement and loss. It is said that the Lord is close to the broken hearted, and that will be our prayer. To all those who loved and knew this good and courageous man, on behalf of a grateful state, I offer our sincerest, deepest condolences and fervent prayer that you might find comfort in your faith, in your families and in the absolute assurance that Indiana will never forget and will never fail to be inspired by the courage, the character, the service and the sacrifice of Officer Rod Bradway. May he rest in peace.
address the root cause of the problem, and show them how to do it. Change will not happen quickly. But it will begin when we change our thinking. It will begin when we raise boys to become men who respect their partners, when we treat our intimate partners as equals, when we tell someone when we see abuse and when we believe peaceful resolution rather than violence is the proper response. Let's all say "No More" to domestic violence. To learn more about domestic violence, discover how you can help and to find resources for victims, visit www.icadvinc.org. "The breast cancer plate is its job," said Beth Knapp, IBCAT Executive Director.
