Bremen farm hosts com husking event
Bi Ri sts Nixon St mi Whiter BREMEN The University of Nebraska may call their teams the Comhuskers, but Bremen will be the site of the Indiana's state champion- ( ship in the true sport of Comhusking. The Craig Geyer Farm on Tyler Road near Bremen will be the sight of the state championships for the second straight year on Oct. 5 with registration starting at 9 a m. The winner of the event will move on to the National Championships in Greenville, Ohio on Oct. 19 and 20. "In the past they would hold the state championship near Fort Wayne but last year because of the drought conditions they were afraid they wouldn't have any com," said Clay Geyer, one of the organizers of the event. "We knew we would so we offered to host last year. This will be our second time around." There will be several categories of "Husker" champions including individual men's and women's champions in several age groups from 14 and under to 75 plus. There will also be team champions crowned with the top three in each category moving on to the Nationals in Greenville. "If you w'ant to compete there is a sls charge but people can come out and watch free of charge," said Geyer. "We've invited teams from FFA programs from all over the state, we've had responses from Tipton and as far

non-resident families do not have the same level of tax contribution to the Wa-Nee district as that of' residents, lessening the impact their taxes would have on increased costs to the schools they seek to attend. Furthermore, the state does not allow the schools to collect any extra fees for transportation usage. In regards to whether each situation could be handled on an individual basis, the board was uneasy with placing that level of responsibility back into the hands of the transportation department, with the worry that it might set a precedent for others to request services, and that it may needlessly create friction among those who were denied bus transportation previously. It was also observed that the bus routes are currently reaching capacity levels as it is. Even so, the concept that families from other districts may choose not to attend Wa-Nee Schools based solely on a lack of bus service was unsettling to the board. "You're in a situation where you can't win in the public's eyes," said vicepresident Don Lehman. "I've been in the public long enough, and I know that people are going to see that bus pick kids up, and they're

away as Vincennes. Last year the FFA programs at Bremen and LaVille wanted more competition so we're trying to give them that." The rules are simple, it's the task that's hard. "You start either left handed or right handed," said Geyer. "Then you're timed. Some classes have 10 minutes, some have 20 minutes. You move down the row husking (pulling the ear off the stalk and removing as much husk as possible) as much as you can and throwing them into the wagon. Following behind you is what they ..... | .
going to see that bus drop kids off, and they're going to question those empty seats." When asked how many transfer students have inquired about bus service, Zentz replied, "A handful." So it was agreed that for the time being, the policy would remain unchanged, with the possibility still existing that the issue may be revisited at some point in the future. "None of us wants to lose students, and none of us wants to lose out on an opportunity for kids to be educated here at Wa-Nee," said Sabo. He did add that transfer students would be welcome to use bus services for athletic events, extra-curricular activities, and field trips, just as resident students do. In other business, the board took action to implement a new policy on how to address memorials, specifically, trees at the school campuses that are typically planted in honor of the deceased. Sabo explained that the maintenance of those trees has become a concern, and they are also having difficulty finding appropriate places in which to plant new l ones. In an effort to create a more uniform set of guidelines, the idea of placing

memorial bricks has come about. "Honor Bricks," as they'll be known, can be requested by family members, classmates, and friends of Wa-Nee citizens and alumni who have passed away. To submit a request for a brick, representatives of the family will be asked to meet with administrators and representatives from the athletic department to discuss costs, inscriptions, and other details. The objective is for all of the bricks to feature uniform size and integrity, and any desired inscriptions must be submitted in writing, as well as meet with the approval of school administrators. The new bricks will be situated at Andrews Field Pavilion and the adjacent concession area. After the bricks have been installed, each person will be acknowledged at a home athletic event by announcing the individual's name and the group sponsoring the brick, followed by a moment of silence. Bricks dedicated to others who have previously been honored have also been purchased for inclusion in the memorial. Other business matters acted upon by the board include: i The appointment of
