Panthers win in season-opening thriller

Although both teams made plenty of typical ear ly-season mistakes, in the aid a horrendously-botched extra pcuit by Jim town proved to be tne deciding factor m the annual Battle of SR 19On a beautiful dear night in Nappanee, with both the home and visiting stand* packed full of enthusiastic fans, the Panthers got the 2013 season off on the right foot by taking the opening kickoff and driving 54 yards m 11 plays. Despite three costly penalties, North Wood made just enough big plays, including critical 3rd down and 4th down catches by Trains Bear and Trent Sellers, respectively, to set up a 21-yard Kirkwood to Cleveland TD pass. Sophomore Connor Miller drilled the extra point and North Wood led 7-0 just six minutes into the game. The Panthers held the lead into the second period when, after an exchange of punts, Juntown answered with a short drive that culminated in a 29-yard touchdown run by Jimmie junior Nik Olson. The PAT kick by Hannes Krogmarm was good, making it 7-7 with 7 minutes left m the half. After North Wood junior Zach Schwartz saved the Panthers by recovering a teammate's fumble on a pop-up kkkoff, Kirkwood led anotfjp drive tCI featured compfff ions’ 1 to senioPfcrent Sauceda. The USFWS estimates the mallard breeding population at 10.4 million, about the same as last year and 36 percent higher than the longterm average. Estimates of most species were slightly below last year's recordsetting estimates. Total ducks, gadwalls, green- and blue-winged teal, shovelers, and redheads remain near record levels in 2013.
