Memorial tops Black Swish

By Jeremy Mast Correspondent NAPPANEE was a game of runs, and Elkhart Memorial had the last run that gave them a 48-38 Northern Lakes Conference (NLC) victory over North Wood last Friday night at the Panther Pit. The Black Swish jumped out to a 10-6 lead with senior Savannah Bley and junior Morgan Olson leading the way scoring all 10 points. Memorial's head coach Steve Scott called a timeout as the crowd and momentum was on the Lady Panthers side. The Lady Chargers responded as they went on an 8-2 run to end the quarter bed 14-14. The last bucket coming on a lob pass to junior Knadijah Moore for an easy lay in. The second quarter started like the first one ended. Led by senior Paige Newvine's two three pointers, Memorial made an 8-0 run to open the lead to 22-14. Out of a timeout North Wood was able to keep pace with Memorial. Late in the first half North Wood made a 9-5 run of their own to cut Memorial's lead in half at 27-23. A key play in the run started as sophomore Ashley Yoder jumped a passing lane near half court and made the steal. Bley took the pass from Yoder and then made a precision pass of her own along the baseline hitting Olson for an easy bucket. Memorial took the 29-23 lead to the locker room on a big bucket with a kiss off the glass by senior Monica Jones with three seconds left in the half. With every Black Swish run the Lady Chargers had an answer. The Black Swish came out strong in the third quarter. They opened on a 9-2 run with Olson scoring all nine points for the Lady Panthers. That gave North Wood the lead 32-31 with 3:10 left in the quarter. The lead was short-lived as Memorial went on a 13-0 run that spanned into the fourth quarter. Memorial cranked up the defensive pressure as well. With sophomore point guard Jordyn Frantz out with a concussion North Wood struggled at times with the Lady Chargers full court press. This did, however, give some other players meaningful minutes and experience that will help

later on during the season. "We got to Took for some shots, and we had shots we passed up," coach Neff said of his supporting cast. "They're (Memorial) going to take them (Olson and Bley) away. Especially tonight since Jordyn (Frantz) didn't play." Neff tried everything mixing his lineups trying to generate some offense. He first went to a tall, physical lineup then moved on to a small, quicker lineup. Neither worked however as the Black Swish couldn't get within eight points in tne final quarter. "Memorial's got a good team," Neff said after the game. "They are very quick. They're physical. There were a couple little runs there and we didn't answer. We had some free throws and good looks but just didn't get the job done offensively again. ...You can't score in the 30s and expect to win." Olson led North Wood with 27 points and 16 rebounds while Bley had 8 points and nine rebounds. Neff was explained that he pleased witn the defensive effort but the missed opportunities concerned him, "We held a good team to 48 points," he said.
