Panthers move to 3-0 with wins over Westview, Fairfield
By Steve Sinus Correspondent NAPPANEE/GOSHEN "-The North Wood Panthers boys basketball team improved to 3-0 on the young season by defeating Westview 63-54 in live Pit, then going on die road for the first time and crushing Fairfield 65-37. NORTHWOOD 63, WESTVIEW 54 Just like in the season opener against Triton, North Wood came out hot in the first period, picking up assists on six of their seven field goals, with Jonathan Wilkinson scoring six points and Tommy Klein 5. The Panthers also turned the ball over five times, leading to 10 Westview points as the visiting Warriors grabbed a 16-15 lead after one quarter, thanks to 6 from sophomore standout Chandler Aspy and 5 from senior Brett Yoder. Wilkinson continued his torrid pace in the second stanza, pouring in eight more points while Aspy did his best to keep up with seven points of his own, but stronger contributions from the rest of the Panthers boosted North Wood into a 33-28 halftime lead. The Panthers continued to expand the advantage in the third quarter, as junior Zach Zurcher nailed 6 points and handed out two assists, factoring in on 11 of the 13 third-quarter points and boosting North Wood to a 46-38 lead. in the one-and-bonus early in the fourth period, Zurcher continued to dominate with 8 more points, and despite 10 fourth-quarter points from Aspy, the Panthers cruised to the 63-54 win. Wilkinson and Zurcher each scored 18 to lead North Wood while Klein chipped in with 12 points. Aspy led all scorers with 26 for Westview, while Kyle Miller added 11 in the loss. NORTHWOOD 65, FAIRFIELD 37 Going on the road for the first time this year did not appear to phase the Panthers in the slightest, as they came out firing from the opening bp. Especially torrid was the versatile Wilkinson, who was four of five from the field, including three treys, and three of three from the line in the opening stanza, pouring in 14 points and leading North Wood to an 18-8 advantage over the Falcons after one period. The Panther defense conbnued to force mulfiple Fairfield turnovers in the second quarter and took full advantage of the miscues, widening the lead to 31-15 at the half. Klem, Zurcher, and Tanner Farmwald all contributed mighbly in the quarter, combining for 10 points. The Panthers conbnued to dominate on both ends of the floor after halfhme, with Zurcher scoring seven third-quarter points and Farmwald six as North Wood increased their lead to 51-25
