kick boosts Panthers by Plymouth in sectional opener
•» By Steve Sinus , Correspondent NAPPANEE After falling behind 13-0 just five minutes into the game, the SorthWood Partthers dug in and kept the ymouth Rockies from scoring for the rest of the night, finally taking the lead on Brendan Widner's 17-yard field goal with 39 seconds remaining in the game and stunning the Rockies 17-13 in the Class 4A Sectional opening round. Hie Black Crunch defense held Plymouth to just 66 yards on the ground (and none in the air) in the second half while forcing three critical fumbles, the last of which led to Widner's game-winning boot. The victory avenged a Tegular-season ending loss to the Rockies, and propelled the Panthers on to the second round of the sectional on Oct. 26. The Rockies began the game much like they had the previous week, driving 75 yards in 11 plays, all on the ground, with Suarterback Ike Kastner taking the pigskin te final two yards on an option left to give Plymouth a 7-0 lead. The Rockies then tried a "pop-up" kickoff and an attempted fair catch by North Wood went awry, resulting in a mad scramble for the loose footiball that ended with Plymouth's Brady Ruffing emerging from a dogpile in possession of the ball at the Panther 35-yard line. The Rockies quickly took advantage of the miscue, completing their only pass of the night on first down to move the ball to the North Wood 16, then opening a hole for sophomore Justin Drudge to dash into the end zone with 4:53 still to play in the first quarter. The PAT attempt was wide right but Plymouth held a 13-0 advantage and looked to be in control. To their credit, North Wood rallied on their next series, driving 69 yards on nine plays, with the big gainer being a 38-yard rusn around left end by freshman standout Tanner Cleveland. After a critical fourthdown pass completion from Will Kirkwood to Nick Graber put the ball on the Plymouth 10-yard line, Cleveland rushed for eight yards, then bulled in from two yards out to

cut the Rockie lead to 13-6 after Widner's PAT attempt was blocked by Plymouth's 6'6", University of Nebraska-bound Dan Samuelson. With rain falling steadily, turning the center of the field into a quagmire, the game turned into a slugfest, with neither team able to make much headway. After North Wood stopped the Rockies on fourth down at their own 32, the next two possessions by each team ended with punts and Plymouth took the 13-6 lead to the locker room. Disaster then nearly struck again on the second half kickoff, as North Wood fumbled and Plymouth's DeAndre Pickford fell on the football at the Panther 30-yard line.

Just three plays later, however, the Rockies gave the ball back to the Panthers when North Wood defensive end Justice Smith forced a fumble by Kastner and recovered at the North Wood 25. The Panthers could not take advantage of the mistake, quickly punting the ball back to Plymouth but after a 22-yard touchdown run by Kastner was wiped out by a personal foul penalty on the Rockies, the turnover bug bit Plymouth again as Drudge coughed up the football and Scott Kem recovered for North Wood. Following an exchange of punts that extended into the fourth quarter, the Panthers mounted a drive on the legs of Blake Cleveland, moving from their own 29-yard line to the Plymouth 30 with

Cleveland getting all but two of the yards through the deepening muck. Kirkwood then found Graber on a hitch-and-go route and the senior took it to the house to narrow the Rockie lead to 13-12 with 4:57 left. North Wood coach Scott Hoover then elected to go for two but Plymouth stopped Blake Cleveland inches short of the goal line, leaving the Rockies clinging to a onepoint advantage. After a tremendous kickoff by Widner pinned the Rockies at their own 20, Kastner quickly ripped off a 13-yard run but on the next play, fumbled again and Merle Mullet emerged from the mud at the Plymouth See Boosts, Page 6
