Annual Resale this Saturday
By Amy Wengek Correspondent BREMEN up to be another bustling weekend at the Wakarusa Missionary Church, although the camaraderie won't be limited to Sunday morning worship. Saturday morning, Sept. 8, the heart of the church will resonate with cheerful banter among friends old and new, as well as the sense of euphoria that oftentimes accompanies a successful quest for bargain hunting. To a great extent, that fellowship symbolizes what the semi-annu-al Children's Resale has become frugality with and for a higher purpose. It's become a pilgrimage for many, quite
literally within a faithful setting, and it truly takes a vil-
lage to carry on. This particular version of the event, which specializes in children's apparel and other family necessities designed for autumn and winter, will take place from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the church, located at 202 W. Waterford St. near downtown Wakarusa. Shoppers will be delighted to find more than 5,000 square feet of items, spanning multiple levels of the church, priced at a mere fraction of what could be bought for retail costs. Among the massive range of goods to be found includes children's and infant's clothing, toys, decorative items, Christian devotionals, books and games, maternity and nursery gear and much more. All of the merchandise is high-quality, gently used and offered by more than 300 area families who aspire to practice their spirit of goodwill to bless and benefit others. The resale even features a twin boutique, as well as one of the latest additions, "The Loop," a special section with a focus on apparel and accessories for teens. There are even dressing rooms to allow young guests to try on clothes they may wish to buy. Visitors are asked to bnng shopping bags or baskets to help easily carry their purchases. There is an incentive to arriving early as well the first 600 people situated in line will receive goody bags filled with trinkets, coupons, and other offerings given by local merchants. The Children's Resale, first instituted locally in 2007, i 7 presented tw r ice a year, once in the spring and then again near the start of the school year. It has become more than simply a way for families to finesse their budgets, it has also been regarded as an exemplary.model for community outreach. The efforts of the vast regional volunteer organization have inspired similar resales in cities and towns throughout northern Indiana. One of the resale's most admirable aspects involves its mission to serve and share with those less fortunate Since

the event's inception, members of the planning committee have worked closely with dozens of area businesses to help provide a voucher program, through which retailers can offer monetary gifts to be converted into shopping coupons issued by the resale. The vouchers are then provided to local families that have been facing economic hardship, allowing them to shop for whatever items they most need to lessen their financial burdens. Also, scores of clothing and other children's essentials, along with diapers and cash donations, are distributed to entities that specialize in the needs of children and families, such as Family Christian Development Center, Reason Enough to Act, and the Women's Care Center/ BABE Store. Five percent of the proceeds culled from the resale will be channeled to these groups, and potentially others. Ninety percent of the earnings are paid to the participating sellers, with the remaining five percent earmarked for publicity related expenses. "We are so excited to see so many local community members investing in the lives of hurting families in an effort to reach out and do what they can," said Resale coordinator Sarah Freitas. "If we all do a little bit, it adds up to being able to help families that might not have been able to provide needed winter and holiday items for their families." Those who' would like more information are welcome to get in touch with Freitas at 574-862-1628 (home), 574-862-2102 (church) or via email at wakarusaresalel@frontier. com.
