Bremen grad saves childfe life; credits school for framing
By Lydia Beers Staff Writer BREMEN Gutierrez learned CPR her sophomore year in health dass, but didn't realize how important that lesson would be until just a week ago. Gutierrez was visiting her aunt Linda Swart in Fishers and enjoying time in a neighborhood pool when a lazy summer day turned deadly. "There were about four families at the pool," remembered Gutierrez. "I was holding my aunt's 9-month-old daughter. There was a little girl playing near the deep end, but her mom was right there. She just disappeared...and nobody knew. About five minutes later (a woman) saw something on the bottom of the pool." Gutierrez said the people at the pool pulled the 5-year-old toddler from the pool, and tried to perform CPR on her unconscious body. "Everyone ran over to (the girl) and they were trying to do CPR but nobody knew how to do it," said Gutierrez. Gutierrez and another woman who was currently in nursing school took over. "I gave her five pumps, and the other girl would give her breaths," said Gutienez, adding that the two were working on the toddler for about five to seven minutes. "Finally, she started puking up mucus," said Gutierrez. "I think (the other adults) learned CPR a long time ago, so they just forgot. I recently just gradated so I remembered it. I thought I would never have to use it (when 1 learned). I think every school should teach CPR, because if I hadn't learned it that girl would have been dead." She said that the pool the incident happened in was not manned by a lifeguard because it was a private pool in a subdivision. "In the beginning, (the toddler) had floaties on her arms, but she took them off to eat a snack," said Gutierrez, adding that the scary instance has made her more watchful of children at pools. "Whenever I go to the pool I am watching every kid because I am so terrified that it will happen again," said Gutierrez. Gutierrez plans to go to Indiana University South Bend this fall to study radiology, and will definitely maintain her CPR skills.

Summer is time for herbs
Summer is a great time to use fresh herbs in your cooking. With more of you cooking at home and working at preparing foods with great flavors and less salt, nerbs are a natural choice. It is difficult to define and draw a firm line between herbs and spices. Some say that herbs are the leaves of herbaceous plants plants with stems that are soft rather than woody, and which die entirely down to the roots after flowering, and spices are derived from the seeds, roots, bark, fruit, or flowers. By this definition, some plants such as coriander yield both herbs and spices. Others say that if the aromatic element comes from a tropical plant, it is a spice; from a temperate tropical plant it is an herb. What I am writing about this week deals with the aromatic leaves of herbaceous plants. Herbs have a role as flavorings, fragrance, medicines, cosmetics, teas, dyes, and ornaments. Herbs are valued in the kitchen for their aromatic essential oils. Rubbing, steeping, or heating the leaves releases their oils so they can be used to flavor and scent a dish or ingredient. Some herbs are used extensively in one cuisine and hardly at all in another. Cilantro, for example, plays a major role in Latin American and Chinese cooking and a somewhat lesser role in

As one of the first of my friends and family to own and operate a computer, I swore I wouldn't give in to using the vast window' of knowledge as a lazy and unattached source of meager social communication. When MySpace became The Latest, 1 felt posting one's pictures and decorating their "space" to fit their style, send of humor, and mood was disgustingly self-serving, a tool for only the vain to use and then only those who had way too much time on their hands. When Facebook made its ascension to the technically-savvy-society's norm, I saw it as a mindless way. to. waste one's life away until my BFFs both told me about all the people they had found from their pasts. Initially, I reasoned, "Why would 1 want to reconnect with people I didn't feel compelled to make a conscious effort for to keep in my life in the first place?" Then relatives began* swooning over the new with one another while I stood firm asking "Is So-And-So's phone out of order?" or "Couldn't you just ask them the next time you see them?" Needless to say, a non-conformist by nature, I wasn't impressed. My friends are people I've had in my life since I met them, because not only do we share the same sense of humor, but they have impressed upon me for one reason or another that they are unique, good-hearted, honest, and strong individuals. These people have been by my side (and I theirs) through thick and thin and I'm not talking about the numerous failed attempts at weight loss. One friend I've had since I was 21, another since I was driving my first car and the third, since Asteroids first began wasting away my allowance at 12. These people have no need to ask for my permission to befriend me. They simply earned the privilege of that title. Nowadays the term "friend" means anyone you may have not felt imme-

Herbs are primarily used as accents and enhance the flavors of foods. An Italian tomato sauce without oregano is hard to imagine, although Are dominant flavor of the sauce is always tomato. In a few dishes, however, the herbs are the major ingredient; basil in Italian pesto, and watercress in a watercress soup. As a flavor accent, herbs may be added to just about every dish in your cooking repertoire: appetizers, soups, salads, stuffing, roasts, stews, sauces, marinades, breads, dressings, mayonnaises, pickles, jellies. diately inclined to choke that has come across your path. Facebook has also brought about the transformation of the word "friend" as a verb. 1 got hooked against my will and have since realized there is good and bad to the network. On the good side, 1 found people I used to know and learned about what had happened to them since I had last snuck out of the house with them in the middle of the night. 1 saw photos of them, their children, their pets, their hobbies, and learned more about them than what 1 had known, from being around them for years on a regular basis. I also remembered why some of them didn't make the "friend" cut to begin with. Facebook helps me remember who's birthday or anniversary it is. It helps me learn things about my children I didn’t know. It helps me to make decisions about where to go for dinner, what's going on with my favorite television shows (that I can't find time to watch), and I regularly find something that makes me laugh or cry. I receive Amber, Silver, and Emergency Alerts. I find news tips and am reminded about a commitment or other that had almost slipped my mind. I've found things I dislike on Facebook (hate is such a strong word): People who brag about how many friends they have. 1 want to ask them, "Sweetie ... would they help you move? Would they lend you money? Would they watch your kids at the drop of a hat and would you want them to?" just so I can assist with the moral descent of their self-implied grandeur.
mint and lemon verbena are occasionally, paired with fruit, but otherwise, herbs seldom appear in sweet dishes. As you are attempting to reduce your sodium intake, many of you are finding flrat herbs can enliven a reduced salt recipe. In addition to their use in specific dishes, herbs are frequently incorporated into other ingredients such as mustard, vinegar, and salt. Herbs have also long been employed to brew tea. Minced tarragon, drives, parsley, or cilantro adds a dimension of freshness and spark to store bought mustard and homemade blends. Almost any fresh herb is suitable for use in flavoring vinegars. Finely minced herbs are great flavor enhancers when added to crisp salad greens or cooked dishes. These finely minced herbs add flavor without calories, and can otherwise eliminate or greatly reduce the need for a sauce or dressing. To really make the most of the cooking experience with fresh herbs you should grow them. A real bonus is that you can grow herbs in pots as well as in raised beds; they can also be incorporated into flower beds. If you are planting herbs in your garden it very important to know that some herbs can spread and take over. Here is a link for a publication on growing herbs www. hort.purdue.edu/ext/ HO-28.pdf.
What I've also learned to dislike (but much closer to hate) are people who obsessive-compulsively note everything they do and every question, situation and meal they encounter. You post photos of several pairs of shoes and want people to vote which to wear? Make a decision for crying out loud! The world in general has more important decisions to stress over. Better yet, buy yourself a magic 8 ball for those totally-tough conundrums. You have an invitation to a party, wedding, or other event? Don't post it on your wall; call me; send an invitation to my mailbox; or at least send me a stinking text. Asking what movie to see is a good reason to poll the virtual social planet but asking what the 10 things people like most about you is not. For telling a large number of people you know why you weren't at this event of other night, Facebook is great. For telling people what you did at the bar last weekend or trying to find out via Facebook ... not so much. I'm now am pretty sure that most of the people I know are featured in at least one chapter on dysfunctional living in a basic social work 101 ... myself included. Admittedly, I have fallen into checking my wall several times a day to see what's the latest gossip and to fill my laughter quota for the day. Sometimes it takes a photo or comment to brighten my spirits. Other times it simply takes a person telling the cyber world how terrible their day was because they couldn't decide which earrings to wear. And yes, sometimes I like to be a little self-indulgent and know that I've made someone else laugh or learn by something I've typed or posted by their "like" indication (which to those that don’t know, is a little thumbs-up icon). But Tweeting and Pinteresting (other recently-made verbs)? Sorry, nope. 1 have better things to do with my time ... like to see what everyone's having for dinner.
