Miss Apple Blossom Scholarship Pageant application deadline is fast approaching
m&. - . NAPPANEE The Nappanee Miss Apple Blossom Scholarship Pageant will headline Thursday's opening events at me 37th annual Nappanee Apple Festival Sept. 13. Incorporating a sports theme for the introduction portion of the pageant, contestants will be competing on the main stage at the Martin's Supermarket Entertainment Depot Plata, 7 p.m. Registration deadline for participation is Aug. 10 and is open to the first 25 applicants. Young women between the ages of 16 and 21 and residents of Elkhart County and all of the Wa-Nee School District are eligible for competition. Council approves mandated measures
By Merrie Chapman Correspondent NAPPANEE Nappanee Common Council members approved two state mandated measures during their June 18 meeting. Ordinance #1463, authorizing official consolidation of the Nappanee 911 Emergency Communications Center with the Elkhart County Public Safety Communications Systems District, passed on second reading. This state required union will become effective Jan. 1, 2013. At that time, all emergency 911 calls will be processed through the county communications dispatch. LIBRARY NOTES NAPPANEE PUBLIC LIBRARY Feeling froggy? Make a frog jumping game from party cups at the next Crafts for Kids day, Saturday, July 14, at the Nappanee Public Library. Materials for the make-and-take craft will be available in the children's department from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. during the city's Second Saturday activities. Library tour planned New cardholders and those interested in learning more about Library services are invited to a guided tour of the Nappanee Public Library Monday, July 16 at 7 p.m. In addition to discovering where to find current bestsellers, a favorite cookbook, or the daily news, participants will be introduced to many special services. These include the Library's newly-updated online catalog, computers and copiers for use in the library; art prints, CDs, DVDs and many other materials for loan. The library, located at 157 N. Main St., holds the tour the third Monday of every month and by appointment. Dome theater features space shows It's a cosmic experience inside an inflatable mobile dome theater at the Nappanee Public Library. July 17, families and children are invited to sign up for one of 12, 25-minute multi-media presentations inside this 360-degree planetarium. The breathtaking Space Show, narrated by Robert Redford, launches visitors on a thrilling tnp through space and time to explore cosmic collisions, hypersonic impacts that drive the dynamic and continuing change of the universe. Other July programs for school-age children include a visit from local author and planetarium educator, Dayle Brown, Tuesday, July 10, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. or 1:30 to 3 p.m. Students will observe, predict, and model the phases of the moon as it revolves around the planet through a starry sky and model eclipses of the sun and moon. Registration is open to all children age six to 11. Pink Floyd program in the dome theater Experience Pink Floyd's classic album, Darkside of the Moon, in total surround with both music and video at the Nappanee Public Library Tuesday, July 17. Kramer Entertainment will present this stunning HD interpretation of sight and sound, created specifically for Darkside of the Moon, in an inflatable dometheater inside the Library. Two 45-minute sessions will be offered at 6 and 7 p.m. The dome is handicapped-accessible. Each show, which is designed for a teen and adult audience, is pre-recorded and led by a Kramer Entertainment specialist. Space is limited.
